FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the price of the HPE Backup and Recovery Service?
The price of the service is based on
● consumption of the service
● the type of subscription
● the rate card associated with the subscription
How is consumption of HPE Backup and Recovery Service calculated?
There are two metrics used to calculate the consumption of the service.
1. Number of protected virtual machines
And for users using backup to the cloud:
2. Used capacity of the Cloud Protection Store
How is the number of protected virtual machines calculated?
A protected virtual machine is defined as a virtual machine that has one or more available recovery points. The number of protected virtual machines is measured every 15 minutes to calculate the average (mean) number of protected virtual machines over the billing period.
How is the used capacity of the Cloud Protection Store (cloud storage) calculated?
Used capacity of the Cloud Protection Store is capacity consumed after data reduction through deduplication and compression. This is related to the size of the backups but is also dependent on multiple factors, including deduplication and compression efficiency, the backup retention period, the change rate of the protected VMs, and the frequency of cloud backups. Used Cloud Protection Store Capacity is measured, in gigabytes, every 15 minutes to calculate average (mean) capacity over the billing period. There are no additional cloud storage charges for operations or recovery (egress).
What types of subscription are available for HPE Backup and Recovery Service?
There are two types of subscription available for HPE Backup and Recovery Service. More subscription types will be added to provide additional payment options. Today, the two subscription types are:
● Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) – You are billed for exactly what you use in the billing period. If you use nothing, you pay nothing. This subscription type provides greater flexibility but does not take advantage of the lower per virtual machine and per gigabyte prices available for fixed commitment subscriptions. With a PAYG subscription you are billed monthly for what you have consumed.
● Fixed Commitment – You commit to a minimum consumption each month for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years. In return, you get lower per unit prices — up to 40% lower per protected virtual machine. With a fixed commitment subscription, you are billed monthly. The bill is based on your fixed commitment quantities. If your consumption is greater than your fixed commitment quantities, your bill is based on actual consumption.
How do I get the best prices for the HPE Backup and Recovery Service?
If you are prepared to commit to a minimum monthly consumption for one or more years, the per-unit prices are lower. The longer the commitment and the larger the committed quantity, the lower the price.
Can I mix fixed commitment (e.g., for protected virtual machines) and PAYG (e.g., for Cloud Protection Store Capacity) subscriptions?
Yes. You can do this by accepting a quote for HPE Backup and Recovery Service that included a minimum commitment for a specified virtual machine protection quantity and a zero commitment for Cloud Protection Store capacity.
What happens if I exceed the minimum committed quantity defined in my fixed commitment subscription?
The excess quantity will be billed. The total quantity (minimum commitment + excess) will determine the unit price for all consumed units. There is no overage penalty for going over the minimum commitment quantity. If the excess usage takes the consumption into a higher quantity band all the units of consumption are billed at the rate card unit price corresponding to the total quantity consumed.
What happens if my monthly usage is under the minimum committed quantity defined in my fixed commitment subscription?
The minimum committed quantity will be billed each month regardless of usage. This minimum committed quantity is set for the duration of the subscription. There is no concept of rolling forward unused entitlement to future months in the current subscriptions.
Can I increase my minimum commitment part way through my committed term in order to move up to a higher quantity band to get lower unit prices?
Yes, the subscription can be increased as desired. However, note that if you have a fixed term commitment that is below the actual service usage, you will benefit from lower prices without having to increase the minimum commitment if the actual consumption moves the consumed quantity to a higher capacity band.
Can I reduce my commitment part way through my committed term to reduce my minimum monthly bill?
The minimum commitment remains in place for the duration of the subscription. The commitment is fixed for the duration and cannot be reduced. At the end of the subscription, a new subscription can be agreed with a lower, equivalent, or higher commitment. A subscription can be canceled in the first 30 days of usage only. A subscription cannot be canceled after 30 days from the start of usage of the service.
Can I limit my monthly commitment?
The ability to limit monthly billing will be offered in the future. At the moment, there is no capability to set quotas or maximum usage quantities. This means the user will have to monitor usage and adjust usage to stay within their required limits.
How are the actual prices for service consumption calculated?
The prices shown on this web page are list prices in US dollars. The actual prices for each unit of consumption will be determined by the rate card associated with your specific subscription. This will be based on the prices on this web site but adjusted for local currency and any specific price adjustments for you.
