Capacity and Performance Numbers
A key attribute of HPE HPE StoreOnce® Systems is the high efficiency deduplication and compression that delivers significant space savings compared to storing recovery points on general purpose storage. HPE StoreOnce deduplication, with fine grained 4 KB chunk sizes, is the most efficient space saving technology available in a backup storage system. In addition to the HPE StoreOnce data reduction deduplication, the space saving achieved is dependent upon many factors including the type of data being protected, nature and frequency of changes to this data, backup software settings, backup schedule, recovery point retention and concurrent tasks contending for resources.
This QuickSpecs contains maximum performance numbers using HPE StoreOnce Catalyst and raw, usable and effective capacity. Raw capacity is the installed capacity of media used to store backup data. This is configured with RAID or other protection against media failure. The usable capacity is the available physical capacity after this protection. The effective capacity is the logical capacity as a result of the HPE StoreOnce data reduction space saving. A ratio of 60:1 is used between the effective capacity and the usable capacity to indicate the space saving that can be achieved. To accurately size the required capacity of the HPE StoreOnce system and the performance required to meet your backup window, your HPE partner or representative should use the HPE StoreOnce Sizer.
HPE StoreOnce VSA
HPE StoreOnce VSA is a software defined appliance that can be managed in the same console as the purpose built HPE StoreOnce systems described in this QuickSpecs. For more information see the HPE StoreOnce VSA QuickSpecs.

Standard Features
The following features and benefits apply to all HPE StoreOnce models. Where differences exist between models and generations, they are explained in the description.
Scaling Up and Scaling Out Capacity Across the Enterprise
Keeping pace with data growth, HPE StoreOnce systems span from an entry-level 18 TB model to an enterprise class model with over 1 PB that can be expanded over 3 PB usable capacity with Cloud Bank Storage. You can choose from preconfigured, dedicated backup systems to match the capacity and performance requirements of larger offices and data center deployments or virtual appliances utilizing existing infrastructures for virtualized environments and smaller and remote offices. HPE StoreOnce deduplication can be extended to cloud and on-premises object storage to create a hybrid backup infrastructure to increase capacity and reduce the cost of backup data that requires extended retention times.
Lowering Data Protection Costs by Reducing Your Backup Data Storage Needs
HPE StoreOnce data reduction reduces the storage capacity required to store backup data sets for substantial savings on storage hardware, power consumption and management costs without impacting backup performance. This storage efficiency allows restore points to be retained for longer for greater backup data accessibility and rapid restore of lost or corrupt data. HPE StoreOnce deduplication also enables network efficient offsite restore points by reducing the amount of data that needs to be replicated, enabling the use of lower bandwidth, lower cost links to transmit data offsite. This opens the way to cost-effective centralized backup from remote sites or branch offices and delivers a consolidated disaster recovery solution for the data center.
Meeting Shrinking Backup Windows
Industry-leading performance - protect large amounts of data within short backup windows with native high performance or the enhanced speed of HPE StoreOnce Catalyst. Minimize backup job overruns with industry-leading speeds of up to 300 TB/hour which means you can shrink backup windows and meet the most stringent SLAs. You can enhance performance by deduplicating at the application source.
Reducing the Time to Restore Data
High speed backup is important, but when system failure strikes being able to restore your data in the shortest time possible is critical to minimizing downtime. That’s why HPE StoreOnce offers industry-leading RPOs and RTOs, particularly with the all-flash HPE StoreOnce 7700.
Freeing up Your IT Resources
Reduce the time spent managing multiple data protection devices and processes and free-up IT resources by consolidating and automating your backup data onto HPE StoreOnce systems. For organizations that have branch and small offices, HPE StoreOnce helps you protect the data at remote sites. You can eliminate the need for dedicated hardware if you use HPE StoreOnce VSA at these sites.
Lowering the Cost of Long-Term Backup Data Retention
Cloud Bank Storage extends the usable capacity of HPE StoreOnce by combining low object storage costs with HPE StoreOnce deduplication. This reduces the storage costs of long-term backup data retention and enables off site data protection without investing in offsite facilities. This is delivered by an extension to HPE StoreOnce Catalyst that leverages public cloud and/or private object storage. This connected object storage is used to provide capacity to the Catalyst Cloud Bank Store which integrates seamlessly into existing workflows. Backup data is written to a Catalyst Store and then, within the policy of the writing application, all or some of this backup data is copied to the Catalyst Cloud Bank Store for long term retention.
Reducing the Risk to Data at Rest and Data in Flight
HPE StoreOnce security provides data at rest and data in flight encryption which prevents unauthorized access to data on disk that has been lost, stolen, or discarded, as well as data being transmitted between devices. It also offers secure erase functionality to prevent expired backups being accessed. These functions can be configured on an application or store basis and are not restricted to the whole HPE StoreOnce system. Data in flight encryption is supported to secure links between devices for HPE StoreOnce replication, Catalyst Copy and Catalyst backup operations. It is not recommended to use IPsec if performing regular restores (including Veeam Backup Copy Jobs) or tape offloads. It is possible write performance may be impacted when using IPsec, however performance improvements should be seen after the first backup. Data in Flight encryption via IPsec is supported on HPE StoreOnce Catalyst only. Using data in flight encryption for VTL direct backup operations to the HPE StoreOnce System over a local network is not supported due to the performance impact.
HPE StoreOnce Catalyst
HPE StoreOnce Catalyst is a data protection optimized interface unique to HPE StoreOnce Systems. It provides higher performance, improved security and more flexible control than emulated tape (VTL) targets or file shares (NFS, SMB). StoreOnce Catalyst is integrated into leading backup applications, so you benefit from simple control of restore point location from a single console. Through your chosen backup application you manage restore point location across your environments to create additional and off-site restore points for added resiliency, with multi-hop, n:1 and 1:n copy configurations supported. HPE StoreOnce Catalyst is an inherently secure protocol and reduces the risk of backups to ransomware compared to using general purpose protocols for backup. StoreOnce Catalyst can run over Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks. Catalyst over Fibre Channel (CoFC) provides the same benefits as Catalyst over Ethernet (CoE) via a Fibre Channel fabric. Catalyst copy over Fibre Channel (CCoFC) utilizes Fibre Channel to transmit copies between HPE StoreOnce Systems. CoFC and CCoFC are useful for customers that have invested in Fibre Channel infrastructure and/or do not want to expand their Ethernet capacity.
Seamlessly Integrating Into Your Environment
HPE invests in extensive interoperability testing to ensure HPE StoreOnce systems work with leading data protection software, operating systems and business application. The highest performance and most flexible protection is enabled using the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst technology. This can be used in Fibre Channel and Ethernet (iSCSI) environments. For backup software that does not have a StoreOnce Catalyst integration, virtual tape libraries (VTL) or file shares (NFS, SMB) shares can be configured. For the current listing of interoperability with backup software, operating systems, applications and networking components refer to the HPE StoreOnce support matrix at
Delivering Reliable Backup and Restore
In any storage system it is essential to ensure that the integrity of the data stored is maintained so data can be recovered exactly as it was written. Corrupted backups can severely impact recovery efforts when you need to restore your data, consequently HPE StoreOnce Systems include HPE StoreOnce Integrity Plus - Industry-leading patented technology to deliver data integrity throughout the lifecycle. With Integrity Plus you get inbuilt protection which not only checks data at many stages both in the backup process and when recovered, but also continually checks the data when at rest, correcting errors if necessary. Additionally, HPE StoreOnce systems feature hardware RAID 6 to reduce the risk of data loss due to disk failure.
Integrated Protection for HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000
The HPE StoreOnce 3720, HPE StoreOnce 3760, HPE StoreOnce 5720 and HPE StoreOnce 7700 can be onboarded to the GreenLake Platform to allow visibility and management using the Data Ops Manager service. Once onboarded, theses HPE StoreOnce systems can used as backup targets for HPE Alletra Storage MP B10000 volume protection policies selected in the GreenLake Block Service. The pre-configured protection policies can be selected to protect a volume or volume set with backup to an onboarded HPE StoreOnce system or a custom protection policy with backup to HPE StoreOnce can be created. This integrated protection delivers high performance snapshot-based protection to generate crash-consistent restore points, on HPE StoreOnce systems, that can be used to extend or replace the protection provided using backup software.
Federated Management of Multiple HPE StoreOnce Systems
By creating a HPE StoreOnce federation, a single HPE StoreOnce browser-based graphical interface can be used to efficiently and consistently manage up to 40 HPE StoreOnce systems. This is valuable for organizations with HPE StoreOnce systems deployed in multiple data centers and/or branch locations. From the GUI of the lead HPE StoreOnce system you can manage all the HPE StoreOnce systems that are members of that federation.
HPE StoreOnce REST API
The HPE StoreOnce REST API provides a well-defined RESTful API that you can use for integrating and automating reporting/management capabilities with HPE StoreOnce systems. The API delivers a programming interface for polling HPE StoreOnce systems with reporting queries at a desired granularity, and the information extracted can be integrated with your reporting and management tools for flexibility in monitoring large HPE StoreOnce environments. The API also allow you to automate and integrate management tasks such as creating and deleting backup targets. The HPE StoreOnce REST API SDK is available for download from here.
Optional Features
Cloud Bank Storage
Cloud Bank Storage is an extension to HPE StoreOnce Catalyst that combines the low cost of object storage with the storage efficiency of HPE StoreOnce deduplication. It connects to external object storage to provide capacity for the Catalyst Cloud Bank store. Using connected object storage in addition to the local system storage increases the usable capacity of the HPE StoreOnce System. When connected to cloud object services, the cloud optimized data transfer and storage minimizes cloud transfer and storage costs. The primary use case for Cloud Bank Storage is to back up to a Catalyst Store and copy the backup data to a Cloud Bank store for low-cost long-term retention. Many public cloud providers and on-premises object storage systems are supported with Cloud Bank Storage.
See the HPE StoreOnce Support Matrix for details. Cloud Bank Storage is a licensed feature. The licenses are available in 1 TB, 10 TB, or 100 TB increments. Licenses are added up to the maximum Cloud Bank Storage capacity for that system. The Models table above shows the maximum licensed Cloud Bank Storage capacity for each model. The licensed capacity is the capacity written to the all the Cloud Bank Storage after deduplication and compression.
Cloud Bank Storage Detach Option
Many object storage vendors offer ‘cold’ tiers that provide reduced cost. The performance of ‘cold’ tiers is not sufficient for Cloud Bank Storage operation. For Cloud Bank Storage stores with backup data that will not need to be changed or updated the Store can be detached to enable it to be moved to a cold ‘tier’. The Cloud Bank Storage Detach option detaches a store from the host System and puts it into a read only state. It can then be moved, independently of HPE StoreOnce or the backup application, to a ‘cold’ tier or other location for long-term, low-cost retention. If the detached Store needs to be read for a restore, or other requirement, it must be moved back to a supported storage tier and reattached to a HPE StoreOnce System. This can be the original HPE StoreOnce System or to another HPE StoreOnce.
Cloud Bank Storage Detach is a licensed feature. Licenses are available in 1 TB, 10 TB, or 100 TB increments. Licenses are added to a system with one or more Cloud Bank Storage licenses, with no upper limit. When a Store is detached, licenses equal to the capacity of the detached store are consumed and remain with detached Store. On detach the capacity of the detached store is available for other Cloud Bank stores.
Maximum Values for Cloud Bank Storage Licenses
Up to a total of 50 Cloud Bank Storage and Cloud Bank Storage Detach license keys can be added to a System. The capacity enabled by a license key is specified using the https://myenterpriselicense.HPE.com/cwp-ui/auth/login.
For Gen4 Plus systems, the capacity is specified in 1 TB multiples. For the larger Systems, it is recommended to generate license keys with larger multiples of 1 TB to avoid this 50-license key limit becoming a constraint.
Cloud Bank Storage Support Entitlement
Support for Cloud Bank Storage is entitled as part of the HPE Support entitlement for the HPE StoreOnce System the Cloud Bank Storage licenses are installed on. No additional HPE Support Services are available or required.

Notes:
– 1This is the available capacity for backup data after RAID and other protection.
– 2This is the effective capacity for backup data based on 60:1 space savings from HPE StoreOnce data deduplication and compression. The actual space saving is dependent on multiple factors including the protected data type, change rate, backup schedule and restore point retention. To accurately size the capacity required, your HPE representative or partner should use the HPE StoreOnce Sizer.
– 3The Cloud Bank capacity uses connected object storage to extend the usable capacity of the system.
– 4This is sum of the maximum local storage capacity and the maximum Cloud Bank storage capacity.
– 5This shows the maximum performance for backup using the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst protocol. The actual performance is dependent on multiple factors including the protected data type, change rate, backup schedule and restore point retention. Backup to a VTL or a StoreOnce file share will have lower performance.
– 6When using backup software that supports HPE StoreOnce Catalyst the Catalyst protocol should be used.
– 7For D2DBS Generic Libraries, tape drive types emulated are Ultrium-VT, LTO-2 to LTO-7. For EML and ESL E Series Libraries, tape drive types emulated are LTO-2 to LTO-7. For IBM-TS3500 Libraries, tape drive types emulated are IBM, LTO-3 and LTO-5. For HPE MSL G3 Series Libraries, tape drive types emulated are LTO-2 to LTO-7.
– 8These max fan-in values apply to VTL and file share replication. They do not apply to HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Copy.
