While the use of cloud architecture is growing fast within enterprises, not all workloads are suitable for public cloud.

Data sovereignty, privacy, intellectual property concerns, compliance, performance, and network latency make public cloud infeasible or impractical for certain workloads and applications. Private and hybrid cloud solutions can bridge this gap, but designing, deploying, and supporting them on your own can be complicated, risky, and expensive.

    Overview

    HPE ProLiant for Azure Local

    Azure Local

Azure Local is a Microsoft Azure hybrid cloud offering allowing customers to operate infrastructure across distributed locations enabled by Azure Arc. Azure Local allows customers to run virtual machines (VMs), containers, and select Azure services with Azure Local on premises, in a manner consistent with the Azure cloud. As documented by Microsoft, the following represent some of the features provided by Azure Local:

    • − Cloud-based operations - Use Azure tools and APIs for more consistent infrastructure provisioning and lifecycle operations across distributed locations.
    • − Central management and visibility - Monitor, update, and secure Azure Local infrastructure directly from the Azure portal using familiar Azure services.
    • − Support for diverse workloads - Run containers, VMs, and select Azure services—including Azure Virtual Desktop and Azure IoT Operations—side by side.
    • − Multiple-node clustering - Increase resilience and uptime with high availability and robust software-defined storage.
    • − Cloud-based VM management - Expand cloud practices with VM extensions, Azure Marketplace images, templates, and role-based access control (RBAC).
    • − Integrated Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) experience - Simplify Kubernetes management and enhance developer productivity with built-in AKS.
    • − Cost-effective migration - Reduce costs by moving workloads from other on-premises virtualization platforms.
    • − Hardened security by default - Safeguard workloads with a stronger security posture and advanced capabilities like Trusted Launch and network segmentation.

Microsoft, with Azure Local, has been recognized as a leader in the 2024 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Distributed Hybrid Infrastructure.

Optional Software License Bundle Exclusively for Premier Solutions and Integrated Systems for Azure Local:

Azure Local with Microsoft Windows Server 2025 OEM License

Available only at the time of purchase of HPE ProLiant Server Premier Solutions and Integrated Systems for Azure Local, the license bundle offers the following benefits:

    • − License: the two included software and service elements with a one-time license fee with no monthly subscription payments normally incurred for Azure Local and Windows Server guests running on the licensed node
      • • Attractively priced, the bundle offers significant savings compounded over time compared to Microsoft’s published monthly Azure subscription payments for Azure Local and fixed or subscription-based licensing requirements for Windows Server guests over the entire active life of an Azure Local node
      • • The Azure Stack Local with Microsoft Windows Server 2025 license bundle is a CPU core-based license with the total number of physical processor cores in a server that need to be licensed (a minimum licensing requirement of 16 cores applies – similar to the licensing minimum of Windows Server)
    • − Flexibility: Can be rolled into a GreenLake Flex Solutions consumption as-a-service contract if desired or purchased along with the node through a one-time payment
    • − Exclusive option for HPE ProLiant Server Premier Solutions and Integrated Systems for Azure Local
      • • Addresses the per core licensing requirements for Azure Stack HCI OS, Microsoft’s premium virtualization OS that underpins Azure Local
      • • The license bundle is an OEM type license and is thereby bound to the Azure Local node hardware it is purchased with and not transferrable to another server.
      • • The license is fully digital, so there are no product keys or any physical items required for the license to be functional. The invoice for the HPE ProLiant Server Premier Solutions and Integrated Systems for Azure Local showing that the bundle license has been purchased as an option along with the system serves as proof of purchase and license.
      • • The Azure Stack HCI OS is preloaded on the Premier Solutions and Integrated Systems for Azure Local servers and the Windows Server 2025 Datacenter images can be added using customer provide images or Azure Marketplace images downloaded as needed from Azure (as the Windows Server 2025 Datacenter Azure Edition image) used in combination with the static Datacenter AVMA guest/client key (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/automatic-vm-activation?tabs=server2025#avma-keys). Please see the following link for details and steps to activate: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-stack/hci/manage/vm-activate?tabs=azure-portal
      • • Includes downgrade rights for use with Standard edition images and older versions of Windows Server

When building a configuration in OCA, an option exists (a check box) to include the license. When enabled, OCA will calculate the number of CPU cores in the configured solution and add the appropriate license SKUs and necessary quantities to the bill of materials. Relevant SKUs are as follows:

Notes: The Azure Stack HCI OS software image will be installed in the factory. Client licenses are not included for VM or container-based instances. Azure Local service pricing is based on the total number of processor cores in a node and billed by Microsoft, HPE acting as CSP (optional), or the CSP of record – unless the OEM license bundle is acquired at the time of purchase. See the section related to the OEM license bundle for more information.

In HPE One Config Advanced (OCA) use the search feature to search for the appropriate product ID (SKU). If available, select the option with the “Wizard” tag. If multiple tiles are presented, click “Customize” on the tile with “Wizard” in the name. The ensuing solution wizard allows the easy selection of curated components and any specific restrictions ensuring that the referenceable bill of materials adheres to the Azure Local requirements on the platform of choice.

A CTO (configure-to-order) may exist for the desired product ID. The CTO option is designed to address “deal specific requests” that the OCA Wizard may be unable to fulfill. Every UCID created via the OCA Wizard will require manual review and an authorized factory override for the forced unbuildable error that will exist. This manual review allows HPE experts to review the request for errors or issues that could impact the reliability or supportability of the solution. If an OCA Wizard is not available, which is typically a temporary condition, the CTO option can be used to build a valid configuration; however, it will still require a manual review and an authorized factory override to proceed with a quote or an order.
