5G
What is 5G?
5G is the fifth generation of cellular technology. It was designed to increase speed, reduce latency, and improve the flexibility of wireless services to serve consumers and digitalize businesses.
Once fully implemented, 5G is a technology for which you will not need any type of cable to get a connection.
5G is the optimal solution to the classic "last mile" problem: providing complete digital connectivity from the transport network to the end customer.
why 5G?
5G promises many things, but above all it could be a factor in improving people's lives and creating a safer and more sustainable society. 5G enables new capabilities that can be used to detect environmental hazards in real time and aid in natural disaster restoration efforts.
The introduction of 5G will bring more efficient networks, responding to capacity needs. Per gigabyte, it will cost 10 times less than the current 4G.
5G will also allow new services, new ecosystems and new revenues. In fact, 5G provides lower latency, which improves the performance of business applications as well as those of other digital experiences, such as online gaming, video conferencing and driverless systems.
5G’s real-life applications
5G’s greatest opportunities come in industrial sectors such as manufacturing, energy/utilities, and healthcare. Capturing this market potential requires investment in technology, as well as business development, go-to-market models, and organizational adaptation.
In the healthcare sector, 5G technology and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity will allow patients to be monitored through devices that constantly provide data on key health indicators such as heart rate and blood pressure. In the automotive industry, 5G's association with machine learning model-based algorithms will provide insights into traffic, accidents, and more. Vehicles will be able to share information with other cars and entities on roads, such as traffic lights.
The 5G network simplifies mobility with optimal open-roaming capabilities between cellular and Wi-Fi. This means mobile users will stay connected as they move from external wireless connections to wireless network connections within buildings without needing to intervene or re-authenticate.
5G technology will be able to improve connectivity in underserved rural areas and cities where demand can exceed today's 4G technology. The new 5G networks will also provide a high-density architecture that, with distributed access, allows data processing at the edge, thus making it faster.
HPE 5G solutions
As telcos gradually move their 4G networks to 5G, both old and new features will have to coexist as a hybrid network. This is why a 5G transformation strategy is essential.
Key components of a 5G network transformation include:
- Providing a more agile and scalable next-generation core by evolving towards a service-based architecture for greater efficiency, agility, and flexibility
- Creating a new level of service execution at the edge of the network to increase functionality and processing capabilities while creating opportunities for new services
- Managing the new 5G hybrid network environment with "end-to-end" digital services
HPE's 5G solutions can be summarized in eight offers:
- HPE 5G Core Stack native
- HPE OPEN Infrastructure at the Edge for 5G
- Application intelligence at the edge with HPE Edge Orchestrator.
