What is Cloud Management?
How does cloud management work?
Cloud management works through a given management software that translates and optimizes data, empowering IT administrators to make informed decisions on critical issues. These decisions involve everything from where data should be stored to oversight of results to help shape and sharpen future decisions.
Why is cloud management important?
Cloud management is not only important to today’s enterprise organizations, it is absolutely critical to data environments in general—especially since hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environments have become increasingly common. Without cloud management, there would be no way of making compute power, security oversight, or applications accessible to the end-user. It would also restrict IT administrators from being able to broadly assess all data environments in order to establish protection against threats and attacks.
What are the challenges of cloud management?
The main challenge of cloud management lies in managing multi-cloud environments. With most organizations’ data living across hybrid cloud environments, IT administrators must take a broad approach at handling a variety of management applications and dashboards. This can get overwhelming to ITDMs, and management capacity can be negatively affected due to the sheer volume of manpower and time required to maintain oversight.
Another challenge of cloud management is maintaining system checks and security audits. Cloud management is utilized to prevent security breaches, but due to the exponential rise in complexity of attacks, hacks and security incidents can still occur. Even if your cloud administrators are constantly running audits, there are still risks across all data sources and applications.
Cost of efficient management tools, and manpower to run the systems, can be high. Management tools must be flexible to give users a meaningful view into the occurrences of their organization’s services and applications. There is often a critical cost associated with the abilities of these tools—you get what you pay for. This poses a challenge to smaller organizations, as they might not have access to the resources they need to effectively secure their data across cloud environments and protect themselves from the complex attacks that hackers initiate.
How is cloud management different from cloud computing?
While both cloud management and cloud computing function in the same data environments and the same applications, they have key differences. They both benefit from each other and coexist to promote a healthy cloud environment for your organization’s data.
The cloud is where all of your organization’s data lives, including your respective resources, apps, and services. Cloud environments allow for immediate access to these resources and are managed by software to enable this access. Cloud management is critical to enabling the accessibility of cloud computing services to users and includes the software, governance, and administrators that determine how and when compute services are accessible.
How does cloud management work for hybrid cloud/multi-cloud environments?
Some would argue that cloud management works best within hybrid and multi-cloud environments. It has the capacity to benefit IT administrators and users within a singular data environment; however, most organizations are far beyond a single cloud storage infrastructure. As most businesses have had the need for some level of on-premises storage solutions, along with the need to access certain capabilities that the cloud can offer, almost every organization strategically utilizes a hybrid or multi-cloud data environment.
Hybrid cloud is the new reality, and organizations all over the world are having to step up and manage the challenges of multi-cloud. Organizations must utilize infrastructure solutions that enable the deployment, operations, management, and cost needs that they face with such a high demand for insights in today’s data-driven reality.
