HPE supports a diverse, common set of media options for both HPE MSA Storage Gen6 and Gen7 systems. HPE MSA Storage users can select from low-cost, high-capacity large form factor (LFF) HDDs to higher-performance small form factor (SFF) HDDs and SSDs. Media selection will typically depend on the user’s IT budget and/or performance requirements but can also be driven by the application or use of their HPE MSA Storage system. For example, many users selecting HPE MSA Storage as a backup device for HPE Alletra Storage might consider using LFF HDDs as their storage of choice due to its lower cost per GB and storage density. Conversely, HPE MSA Storage users creating a shared storage solution for servers managing multiple transactional database applications will opt for higher-performance media such as SSDs, which reduce latencies and the time required to access data.
What is an HPE MSA Storage expansion drive enclosure?
When an HPE MSA Storage base array has reached its maximum storage capacity, adding more capacity, first, requires adding an expansion drive enclosure. There are two options for drive enclosures based on the selected drive form factor (LFF or SFF). Drive enclosures feature dual SAS connectivity for redundant configuration to controllers in the base array. Multiple drive enclosures can be added, up to the maximum (either 3 or 9) supported by each base array system.
What’s the difference between a storage array and direct attached storage?
Direct-attach storage (DAS) requires independent management of storage resources for each server. On the other hand, storage arrays can cost-effectively and efficiently manage data storage resources, security, data protection, and disaster recovery for all data within the business.
