Hewlett Packard Enterprise Recycling Programme
The Department of Environmental Affairs has put together a National Waste Management Strategy to effectively implement the National Waste Management Act of 2009. The National Waste Management Strategy defines the formulation of Industry Waste Management Plans for all waste categories including Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
One of the cited intentions is to reduce the flow of recyclable and hazardous waste streams into landfills. HP South Africa is actively participating in industry initiatives in formulating an approach to ensure the environmentally responsible management of e-waste in line with HP global environmental policies and standards. WEEE in South Africa and other emerging markets is posing a challenge as well as a significant opportunity.
IT derived WEEE representing about 20% of the total WEEE stream, is a valuable resource for the re-use and secondary raw material markets. Processing and disposing IT WEEE incorrectly can be a human health and environmental hazard. Through African IT WEEE pilots and a number of desk studies HP has been assessing the current conditions for electronic recycling and test methods to improve recycling processes and equipment in the quest of a financial and environmental sustainable solution.
