What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is a form of malware that steals a victim’s data and charges a ransom for its return.
One of the most common forms of malware, ransomware is created to be downloaded and used by less technologically advanced criminals. It steals the victim's data and demands a ransom for it, a portion of which the original creator of the malware receives. Ransomware is dangerous because it is constantly evolving to be more effective, harder to detect and easier to use.
Protecting against ransomware
Due to the nature of ransomware, it is difficult to completely prevent ransomware attacks. The key to dealing with them is vigilance on the part of enterprises and their employees. Employees that are familiar with security best practices are less likely to fall prey to phishing. Most important, though, is that data is regularly backed up and stored in multiple formats so that, in the case of a ransomware attack, it can quickly be restored. The only way to make sure ransomware is completely gone is to reimage all computers networked to the computer on which the initial infection took place.
