Replace GPU PCI Riser Cards

Replace riser cards from both right and left trays.

  • Replacement PCI riser cards:
    • 101463801 – Right GPU tray (slots 1 and 4)
    • 101464001 – Left GPU tray (slots 2 and 3)
  • Tools: Adjustable torque driver (or Phillips screwdriver)
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Server: Remove the server from the rack and place it on a stable ESD-safe work surface.
  1. Remove the server cover.

Remove Slot 2 Add-in Card

  1. If present, remove the slot 2 PCI add-in card.
    1. Remove two screws that secure the slot 2 PCI card to the rear panel.
    2. Disconnect the slot 2 PCI card and place it on an ESD-safe work surface.

Remove Left GPU Sled

  1. Remove the left GPU sled from the server.
    1. Disconnect the slot 2 and slot 3 interface boards from the GPU sled and left PCI riser assembly.
    2. Loosen 4 captive screws that secure the left GPU sled to the chassis.
      Figure: Remove Left GPU IFBs
    3. Grasp each fan handle, and lift the GPU sled straight out of the chassis, unseating the power connector from the power backplane. Place the GPU sled on an ESD-safe work surface.

Remove GPU Trays from Left Sled

  1. Remove all four GPU trays from the left GPU sled.
    1. Remove 2 screws that secure each GPU tray to the sled.
    2. Pull the handles to remove the GPU tray from the sled.
      Figure: Remove Left GPU Trays
The GPU tray IFB includes a blind mate power connector that unseats from the PCI riser assembly when the GPU tray is removed.

Replace GPU PCI Riser Card

  1. Disconnect the fan connectors from the PCI card. One is on front of the PCI card and the other is on the backside, as shown below.
Figure: Replace Left GPU Riser Card
  2. Remove the 12 screws attaching the PCI riser card to the sled.
  3. Remove the GPU riser card and replace it with the new GPU riser card.
Make sure to use the correct length screw in each hole.
  4. Connect the two fan connectors.

Reinstall the Left GPU Sled

  1. Slide the tray into the GPU sled. Align the guide pins (metal or white plastic) at each end of the tray with the groove in each side of the GPU sled.
  2. Secure the GPU tray to the GPU sled (2 screws)
  3. Grasp the fan handles and position the GPU sled in the chassis so that the power connector on the PCI riser aligns with the power backplane connector.
  4. Tighten 4 captive screws to secure the GPU sled to the chassis.
  5. Fold the fan handles down flush with top of the chassis.
  6. Connect the interface boards from slot 2 and slot 3 to the PCI riser
  7. If used, reinstall the slot 2 PCI add-in card.

Replace Right GPU PCI Riser Card

Remove Right GPU Sled

  1. Disconnect the flex-foil cables (slots 1 and 4) from the GPU sled PCI riser assembly, as shown below.
    Figure: Remove Right GPU Sled
  2. Loosen 4 captive screws that secure the right GPU sled to the chassis.
  3. Grasp each fan handle, and lift the GPU sled straight out of the chassis, unseating the power connector from the power backplane. Place the GPU sled on an ESD-safe work surface.

Remove GPU Trays from Right Sled

  1. Remove the four GPU trays from the sled.
Figure: Replace Right GPU Riser Card

Replace Right GPU PCI Riser Card

  1. Disconnect the fan connectors from the PCI card.
Careful: Avoid pinching any of the fan wires on the metal edges of the chassis.
  2. Remove the 11 screws attaching the PCI riser card to the sled.
  3. Remove the GPU riser card and replace it with the new GPU riser card.
  4. Connect the two fan connectors.

Reinstall the Right GPU Sled

  1. Slide the GPU trays back into the GPU sled.
  6. Reconnect the flex-foil cables (slots 1 and 4).

Final Steps

  1. Install the server top cover.
  2. Install the server back into the rack.
