WHY HYBRID CLOUD?
Apps that can easily move to the cloud already have. Meanwhile, two out of every three apps remain on-premises due to issues such as data gravity, sovereignty, compliance, cost and interdependencies with other systems. This leaves enterprises caught in the middle of old and new, struggling to reach their transformation goals within a complex dual IT operating environment.

Can everything be moved to cloud? Where should my apps and data live?
Every company is different, and every app has its own set of considerations that inform where it should be placed. General factors include performance, latency, risk, data needs, network connections, architectural considerations and security.
With the HPE Right Mix Advisor (RMA) approach from HPE Pointnext, you can determine the best-fit application destinations for your preferred combination of public and private resources. Choices are based on the unique price-performance, portability, operational, and business requirements of each workload.

UNDERSTAND CHALLENGES OF MOVING TO HYBRID CLOUD
There are many complexities inherent in migrating applications to the cloud. Even simple lift-and-shift projects can go wrong when things like application dependencies, outage windows, testing plans, critical vendor support and networking checks go unaccounted for. For more complex migrations, common pitfalls to avoid include:
- Neglecting to get key stakeholders involved from the beginning: Without adequate planning and buy-in involving all affected stakeholder groups, projects can quickly get derailed. Adding to this, if the ultimate business value of moving to cloud hasn’t been widely accepted, small setbacks can easily put the entire project in jeopardy.
- Not taking the time to carefully evaluate how each of your applications should be dealt with: The “6R” framework calls for each application to be vetted against a set of considerations that will allow you to determine whether to “retire, retain, repurchase, rehost, replatform or refactor.” Not doing so may result in apps that aren’t optimised for their environments and are costly to run.
- Failing to address the “people and process” side of the equation: Applications are only one part of any move to the cloud, and potentially not the most difficult to deal with. Cloud threatens the status quo, and without reskilling your team and establishing new processes, your efforts to move to a truly cloud-first paradigm are likely destined to fail.

BEST PRACTICES FOR BUILDING A PLAN
Engaging a broad group of stakeholders from the beginning, knowing your company’s “why” for moving to a cloud-first approach, and having a plan for people and processes are all crucial to the ultimate success of your cloud adoption. A good transformation plan addresses these elements:
- Applications
- Economics
- Governance, risk and compliance
- Change management
- Service operations
- Security
Establishing a Cloud Business Office (CBO) - a permanent operational and governing body - to direct and guide all aspects of your cloud programme can help ensure success.

Is now the right time to move to cloud? Are we ready?
Most businesses have realised that their flexibility, speed and ability to adapt to emerging market trends in coming years will depend on adopting a successful cloud strategy. At the same time, the need to get cloud right, and to not disrupt business-critical functions in the process, weighs heavily on those who will be responsible for implementing a cloud-native approach. HPE can help assess your business’s cloud readiness and mitigate any gaps.

How can I structure a plan to get some quick wins?
A comprehensive application profiling exercise will show which applications should be first-movers based on ease-and-impact analysis. To quickly show the value of moving to cloud, applications that are likely to be high ROI, low risk and easy to migrate and run in the cloud should be moved first.

How can I calculate the financial costs and benefits of moving to cloud?
The business value of cloud is more about agility and utilisation than any other cost consideration. Traditionally, high utilisation reduces IT spend, but limits agility and negatively impacts innovation and business growth.
Cloud provides the ability to provision and de-provision nearly unlimited resources as needed with complete control. Moving from the standard 20% to near 100% utilisation provides significant cost advantages and even greater value in the ability to quickly solve business problems without waiting for software and hardware procurement and installation.
In addition to this, moving to cloud typically produces both hard and soft cost savings. Examples of hard cost savings include reduced spending on infrastructure and operational costs. Soft savings include increased developer productivity, decreased human error, ability to change business process quickly and increased customer satisfaction.Related resources

Are “IT consumption” models a good thing or a gimmick?
Paying only for the resources you use, along with the ability to quickly provision and de-provision resources, gives you valuable flexibility. Your business can avoid costly over provisioning, consume the latest technologies without “ripping and replacing” data centre infrastructure, and give staff the ability to experiment with new products and solutions in a low-risk, low-cost manner.
-
How do we prevent cloud costs from skyrocketing?
Ensuring that apps are optimised for their environments is a good first step to avoiding unexpected costs. Maintaining visibility across your entire IT estate, as you can with HPE GreenLake Central, can also help you stay on top of what you’re spending and why.

When Philips empowers hospitals, patients win
Philips’ vision for improving humanity’s health and well-being depends on helping the world’s hospitals master the continuum of care, end to end: patient to provider and back to patient again.
Challenge
Digitisation has enabled significant advancements but has also complicated IT, adding new complexity and costs. Leveraging public cloud capacity is attractive but poses compliance or regulatory issues.
Solution
Philips equips hospitals with “best of both world” technology to keep critical care applications on premises, secure and under control, while leveraging the public cloud where it makes sense.
"With HPE, we found a partner that can support us globally to roll out our hybrid cloud capabilities."
Result
Philips “smart hospital” processes will help providers deliver end to end patient care, from at-home data capture through admissions, diagnostics, in-hospital bedside monitoring, treatment and follow up.
Making Capital with Hybrid Cloud - A New Cloud Experience
Making your business processes faster and more agile across the board is not a trivial process. Chances are your current infrastructure is rooted in traditional, manual-driven strategies, and technology that is limited to keep up with today’s complex apps and increasing data demands.
