Thousands of developers across the company are focused on open source projects, and HPE sponsors and supports the open source community in a number of ways, including: contributing code, sponsoring foundations and projects, providing active leadership, and participating in various committees. We are committed to the growth, maturity, and success of open source and contribute in a variety of ways. Whether contributing directly to projects, improving quality and reliability for our products, increasing the support for open source projects, or educating customers about the fear, uncertainty, and doubt spread by opponents of open source, HPE focuses on enabling interoperability and reliable consumption of open source in its products and across the open source ecosystem.
Here are a few highlights:
We focus our contributions to Linux on quality, reliability, scalability, and security to help enable the Linux platform for the enterprise. We also work to expand Linux into other areas like embedded systems and the cloud.
Looking to the future, our contributions to Debian are helping to drive our next generation computing platform known as “The Machine".

HPE was the first large enterprise company to join the project. Since joining, HPE has been an active and leading contributor to the OpenStack project by a number of metrics (source: Stackalytics). Our active participation enables visibility into and engagement with governance, roadmaps, blueprints, and project development.
In addition, HPE contributes data centers, servers, power and bandwidth to the community – the OpenStack project infrastructure runs on HPE equipment. This includes development, testing, and collaboration tools.

Cloud Foundry helps quickly build, deploy and scale cloud native applications. HPE focuses its contributions on integration with OpenStack technology to enable developers to quickly build, deploy and scale cloud native apps. We recently contributed the .NET server code base and .NET tools and have a number of engineers who have been through the project Dojo and others in the queue to participate.

CloudSlang is an open source tool for automating your DevOps use cases using ready-made workflows. Using CloudSlang, you can orchestrate popular DevOps technologies, such as Docker and CoreOS in an agentless manner.
The CloudSlang Orchestration Engine is actually the same proven engine that runs under the hood of HPE's Operations Orchestration (OO) product. Developed by the OO team and contributed to the open source community, our goal is to leverage the power of community to create best-in-class orchestration technology.
Although writing your own CloudSlang content is easy using our YAML-based DSL, you don’t need to write a single line of code to leverage the power of CloudSlang. There is a growing repository of ready-made content that integrates with many of today’s hottest technologies, such as Docker and CoreOS. And, the open source nature of the project means that you’ll be able to reuse and repurpose content shared by the community.

Leveraging decades of HPE experience, this is an open source project to develop a transactional SQL-on-HBase solution. It was begun as an HPE project and has been moved to the Apache Software Foundation as an incubated project.

Grommet is and advanced open source UX framework for enterprise applications. HPE developed it to enable consistent interfaces across all our various products and recently open sourced it for others to use and contribute.

The Machine is a Hewlett Packard Labs ambitions project that will revolutionize the fundamental architecture of computers. The system software for The Machine is based on Debian GNU/Linux, and there are many areas of research utilizing open source code and collaboration.

Open source is an important part of what we do as a company. We're a solutions provider, active user of many projects, and a longstanding participant in communities all over the world. Starting with Linux in the late 1990s and moving up the stack, HPE has been a key contributor toward readying open source technologies.
Our breadth of experience in open source includes vast internal deployment, partnering across projects, embedded uses of technologies, contributing upstream to projects, offering customers consulting and support, and open sourcing some of our own technologies. We’ve also helped others establish governance models that enable effective collaboration.
