Curbing Technology’s Unseen Climate Cost

Thursday, January 23, 2020 at 4:15 - 5:15 pm CET
Ice Village, Dome B

Digital technologies hold promise to solve some of the world’s most complex challenges, yet the Internet is already the 5th largest energy consumer in the world, and for attractive data hosting countries like Switzerland, data centers could consume more than 50% of the country’s electricity supply by 2035. A first-of-its-kind Data Center Efficiency Label promises to reduce data center energy consumption by 30% and eliminate the net carbon footprint of data centers in Switzerland. This has the potential to take us off a climate collision course by offering a new tactic to curb global warming in an increasingly digital world.

This session will consider the current limitations for measuring data center efficiency and offer a new solution to enable data-center operators, industry associations and governments to measure and control the real climate impact of digital infrastructures.

Please note the session is open to media
