HOUSTON, Texas – November 18, 2022 – At SC22, the annual international supercomputing conference, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) demonstrated ongoing leadership with its world-leading supercomputers that are recognized for driving breakthrough performance, energy efficiency, scientific discovery, and AI innovation.
HPE also recently announced it is making supercomputing accessible for more enterprises to harness insights, solve problems and innovate faster by delivering its supercomputers in a smaller form factor and at a lower price point. Its expanded portfolio includes the new HPE Cray EX and HPE Cray XD supercomputers.
HPE and HPE-built supercomputers were recognized for a range of achievements, including:
HPE delivers the world’s fastest, energy-efficient supercomputers
In the latest Top500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, HPE delivered three of the top 10 fastest supercomputers, among 100 other systems. These include Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Frontier, which remains the world’s first and fastest exascale supercomputer, CSC’s LUMI, the fastest supercomputer in Europe and third fastest in the world, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Perlmutter, the eighth fastest supercomputer in the world.
HPE also delivered Setonix at Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, making it Australia’s most powerful supercomputer, and LANTA at the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), making it the most powerful supercomputer in Thailand and South East Asia.
Additionally, HPE built seven of the top 10 most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world, which include KTH Royal Institute of Technology’s Dardel, Frontier, Frontier TDS, GENCI-CINES’ Adastra, LUMI, Perlmutter, Setonix, and Champollion, an AI supercomputer that combines HPE’s supercomputing technologies with the HPE Machine Learning Development Environment, a purpose-built machine learning platform that allows uses to build larger AI models, faster.
ACM’s 2022 Gordon Bell Prize Awards: HPE-built supercomputers power award-winning research
The ACM Gordon Bell prize is a highly distinguished annual award that recognizes outstanding achievement in supercomputing and how the technology is applied to applications in science, engineering, and large-scale data analytics. This year’s Gordon Bell prize was awarded to a 16-member team from French, Japanese, and U.S. institutions for their project, “Pushing the Frontier in the Design of Laser-Based Electron Accelerators With Groundbreaking Mesh-Refined Particle-In-Cell Simulations on Exascale-Class Supercomputers.”
The research involved three HPE-built supercomputers: Frontier, GENCI’s Jean Zay and Perlmutter. By using a combination of the top supercomputers, scientists were able to simulate plasma accelerators, which is used to speed up the process of nuclear fission, 500X faster since the effort was started six years ago.
Additionally, the ACM Gordon Bell Special Prize for High Performance Computing-Based COVID-19 Research, which recognizes outstanding research achievement in understanding the COVID-19 pandemic through the use of supercomputing, was awarded to a 34-member team for their project, “GenSLMs: Genome-Scale Language Models Reveal SARS-Cov-2 Evolutionary Dynamics.” The project involved the Polaris, an exascale testbed system, which HPE built for Argonne National Laboratory, to transform how new and emergent variants of the viruses are identified and classified.
HPE is honored with eight 2022 HPCwire Editors’ and Readers’ Choice Awards for breakthrough achievements supercomputing
This year’s awards honor HPE for a range of achievements, including:
- Top Supercomputing Achievement for building the world’s first and fastest exascale supercomputer, “Frontier”, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Frontier is an HPE Cray EX supercomputer that has reached 1.1. exaflops to help scientists solve problems that are 8x more complex, up to 10x faster.
- Best Sustainability Innovation for enabling the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputer with the Frontier exascale system that achieved the number one position on the June 2022 Green500 list. Additionally, HPE also built other top efficient systems in the world with EuroHPC JU/CSC’s LUMI, and GENCI-CINES’ Adastra.
- Best HPC Collaboration (Academia/Government/Industry) using the HPE-built Jean Zay supercomputer for GENCI, to enable Bloom researchers, part of BigScience’s global collaborative effort, to develop the world’s largest, open and multilingual Natural Language Processing (NLP) model.
- Best Use of HPC in Physical Sciences involving the HPE-built Bridges-2 supercomputer for the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to understand how galaxy clusters form and persist by applying AI to simulations of galaxy clusters.
- Best Use of High-Performance Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence using the HPE-built Bridges-2 supercomputer at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, among other systems, to develop machine-learning-driven robotic production of MRI contrast agents. The algorithm offered a path toward improving MRI images unexpected by human experts.
