HPE Brings to Life London Shell Eco-marathon Event with Technology

LONDON, 27 June, 2016 – Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) today announced that it has teamed up with Shell, the multinational oil and gas company, to support the companys Shell Eco-marathon event through the use of technology and promote the importance of creating a sustainable future.

 

Held each year in Asia, the Americas and Europe, Shell Eco-marathon is one of the worlds most challenging student innovation competitions. Teams are challenged to design, build and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles with the aim of creating a vehicle that can drive the furthest on the equivalent of 1 kWh or 1 litre of fuel and the team that goes the furthest wins.

 

As the Global Innovation Partner for Shell Eco-marathon, HPE is helping bring the event to life through a Live Data Project. Using bespoke analytics, automotive software, IoT, apps and real-time data from the vehicles, the event will be made more engaging for both the teams and spectators.

 

This years European event will take place from 30 June to 3 July at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London and will conclude with the Drivers World Championship on 3 July where the top winning teams from Asia, North America and Europe will all compete for the first time.

 

This new competition is an important evolutionary step in the over 30 years long history of Shell Eco-marathon adding new challenge and recognition for our participants. For the first time the worlds best UrbanConcept teams will come together in the same location competing in an exciting race to find the most energy-efficient driver, said Norman Koch, Technical Director for Shell Eco-marathon.

 

 

For the Live Data project, transponders on the vehicles will collect sensor input data and transmit it across the 3G/4G network to the IoT platform. From there, the data will then be picked up by a bespoke data platform built specifically for the event and used to provide information to spectators and teams. Data that will be shared includes which teams have made it through technical inspection, the position of vehicles once racing, the amount of fuel consumed, as well as details about the teams such as names, photos and the university they are from.

 

As part of the event, HPE will also showcase its Connected Car to demonstrate the impact technology will have on the everyday lives of people.
