Black History Month is a time for reflection, celebration, and continued action. It’s an opportunity to honor the profound contributions of Black individuals—both past and present—who have shaped industries, driven innovation, and enriched our culture in immeasurable ways. In the world of technology, Black innovators have influenced the evolution of ethical AI, driven innovation and creativity across tech segments, and made groundbreaking advancements that challenge prevalent biases.

HPE’s Lavonne Monroe shares her thoughts on how Black history continues to shape the IT industry, the hidden figures who deserve more recognition, and how each of us can contribute to creating a more inclusive future.

How do you think Black history has shaped or influenced the culture of the IT industry?

The combination of black history and IT has led to growing awareness of the risk for harmful biases in technology when not proactively addressed. Our need for ethical technology is driving a continued focus on diverse voices and experiences to power and feed the algorithms. We have to continue to contribute in this space.

What are some lesser-known aspects of Black history that you believe have had a significant impact, but are often overlooked or forgotten?

Black history is a tapestry of rich and diverse narratives, filled with countless innovators and trailblazers who have shaped our world. I particularly think of the countless, nameless Black women who have not made the news, who are not known for their contributions - whether technical in nature or not – who never gained the notoriety to have their faces and names imprinted in history. Black women whose stories remain untold. These women, like my mother and grandmother, are the hearts and souls of our families. They labor tirelessly, often without recognition or adequate compensation, to provide for their loved ones. Despite the hardships, they persevere, nurturing the next generation. My heart swells with gratitude for these unsung heroes who, through their extraordinary efforts, make a profound difference every single day.

What advice would you give to someone looking to be a stronger ally to the Black community?

Educate yourself about our history and more importantly the persistent issues that affect the black community. Be an avid listener and life-long learner and supporter. Show support by using your voice in key situations to advocate for access.
