Once the domain of elite academic institutions and government research facilities, high-performance computing (HPC) the use of super computers and parallel processing techniques for solving complex computational problems is rapidly making its way into the enterprise, disrupting industries and accelerating innovation everywhere. Thats because businesses today are recognizing the big potential in the seas of their corporate data.
Organizations large and small are adopting HPC and big data analytics to derive deeper, more contextual insights about their business, customers and prospects, and compete in the age of big data.[1] These businesses see revenue opportunity in the explosion of data being generated from new sources, like the proliferation of mobile devices, the Internet of Things, the ever-expanding volumes of machine-generated data, and the increase of human data in the form of social media and video.
What is even more exciting is what data analytics technologies can do to enable new scientific discoveries and cures for diseases, determine deficiencies around customer services and product quality, and enhance cybersecurity and fraud detection.
Positioning for Growth
Thats why today, HPE announced plans to acquire SGI, a global leader in high-performance solutions for compute, data analytics and data management, with a 30-plus year track record of innovation excellence.
Not only will the acquisition of SGI strengthen HPEs position in the high-growth big data analytic segment, it will also extend our presence in HPC verticals, such as government, life sciences, higher education and research, and manufacturing, as well as supercomputing.
Tackling Customers Biggest Problems
This acquisition will enable us to combine both companys best-in-class portfolios, including our compute solutions and SGIs in-memory, high-performance data analytics technology, and provide our customers with sophisticated solutions designed to solve the worlds toughest problems.
Together, HPE and SGI will offer one of the technology industrys most comprehensive suites of data analytics products and services helping organizations extract maximum insights from exploding data volumes more quickly, drive business automation and innovation, and gain a competitive edge.
At HPE, we are focused on empowering data-driven organizations, and by joining forces with SGI, I believe we can help usher in a new era of big data-driven discoveries.
The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of HPEs fiscal year 2017, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Until then, we continue to operate as two independent companies.
