Vice President, AI Research Lab, HPE Labs
Suparna Bhattacharya is an HPE Fellow in the AI Research Lab at HPE Labs, leading the vision of a self-learning data foundation for AI with a focus on data-centric and trustworthy AI research. Suparna has a passion for realizing innovations that blend insights from diverse computing domains. Her deep experience in several areas of systems software development and research spans many layers of data-processing systems and the storage stack. This includes several enjoyable years of open-source contributions to the Linux kernel, 28 granted patents, 30 publications, and a book on Resource Proportional Software Design for Emerging Systems. Over the last decade, her work has advanced software design and cross-layer solutions for complex systems that target new storage technologies and software frameworks for analytics and ML.
Suparna was a Distinguished Technologist in HPE’s storage group and HPE’s software defined and cloud group before she joined the AI Research Lab (HPE Labs) in 2020. In these previous roles, she advanced architectural innovation and technical strategy for hyperconverged and software defined storage, edge-to-cloud optimization, containers, persistent memory, and other emerging technologies. She established a vision for how analytics and AI create an inflection point to re-think system software and storage layers, conceiving “meaning aware storage” which departs from traditional optimizations to prioritize insight-rich data, reducing resources spent on similar data or similar analyses, much like our brains learn to sift meaningful data.
Suparna was elevated to IEEE Fellow in 2022 for her contributions to the Linux kernel for the enterprise and advanced data processing systems. She is also a Fellow of the India National Academy of Engineering. She received the HPE Women’s Excellence Award in 2017 and 2022, the IEEE India Council Woman Technologist of the Year award in 2020, the Indian Institute of Science Prof S.K. Chatterjee Award for Outstanding Woman Researcher in 2019, and Zinnov Next Generation Women Leaders Award in 2019.
Suparna joined HPE in 2014 after spending 21 years at IBM’s Systems and Technology Group and Research division, where she was also an elected member of the IBM Academy of Technology. She holds a B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from IIT Kharagpur (1993) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a best-thesis award from the Indian Institute of Science (2013).
