    Video platforms continue to grow as the demand for online content keeps rising—driven by the fact that the viewers’ consumption habits are shifting toward more on demand, or less live linear TV. Moreover, the requirement for content on multiple platforms is multiplying the file formats and lengthening media processing.

    Leveraging an IP-based media workflow service is the only way to address the video consumption growth while OPEX and CAPEX budgets are decreasing. By eliminating the CAPEX heavy solutions, such as appliance-based media processing functions, the options for new software-defined media workflow solutions provide more advanced capabilities to manage the increasing number of files, and for less money.

HPE Media Workflow Master (MWM) offers a service-oriented architecture that is flexible and modular for any Telco operators or Broadcasters that require a media asset and lifecycle management solution.
  • Augment content metadata

    Augmented metadata relies on the ability to generate new metadata by analyzing the video scenes using image recognition and the closed captions within the asset. For every scene, you can determine who is in the scene and where they are. With speech recognition technology it is possible to automatically create captions and to translate them.

    HPE MWM has taken an important step to embrace augmented metadata for video assets integrating audio and video analytic tools to extracts information of who is in a scene and what they are talking about, among other things. Linear television including news, financial news, and sports can be chaptered, creating on-demand files that reference subjects of interest to viewers, with start and finish timestamps.

  • Introducing HPE Media Workflow Master

    HPE MWM enables the automation of content management operations and distribution in variety of formats required to support video services involving Communications Service Providers (CSPs) to deliver content in a multitude of formats—or a broadcaster preparing content for playout.

    HPE MWM enables operators to easily view and manage information associated with content capture, transformation, and delivery to multiple destination platforms in multiple formats. HPE MWM is a complete workflow system that includes resource and control management, metadata enrichment, asset management,

    and destination platform management.

  • Compliant with industry standards

    HPE MWM adopts the industry-leading European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) Framework for Interoperable Media Services (FIMS) standard, guaranteeing the ease of integrating natively with all components supporting this protocol. Thereby, it provides a simple way to integrate with external systems and processing nodes that don’t support FIMS.

    HPE MWM combines metadata and assets with the ability to customize processes and workflows to ingest, transform, and publish them using any format type. The solution is designed to offer a high degree of automation to many operational processes associated with assets and metadata lifecycle management, for example, ingesting, processing, publishing, and deleting.

    HPE MWM solution is comprised of eight main modules for asset, metadata, and workflow management operations:

    All the tools needed integrated in one user-friendly interface

    HPE MWM is a thin-client-based software, meaning it can be accessed from any browser, without the need of installing a special software. It can be hosted in the cloud or on-premises at the customer’s facilities. However, it’s not just the accessibility that is easy—the use of the software is intuitively segmented in multiple functions.


    The software offers system users a unique user-friendly portal to perform operational configurations for workflows, watch folders, working areas, and destination platforms. The portal also includes a powerful search engine that allows the user to search content based on a variety of criteria.


    Content Management

    The asset catalog is the repository and indexing system for ingested assets and related metadata, as well as any technical version created (referred to as derived assets) during the work order processing steps. It enables the association of title with the poster or video assets, updating the central library, file location management, and distribution history. In addition, it allows lifecycle management of assets, defining how long an asset can reside in archive or when to publish it and so on.


    Workflow Engine

    A central component to the HPE MWM solution is the Workflow Engine module, which defines and governs all jobs needed to complete a full work order. The system supports a fast yet dynamic way to automate complex workflows, so format encodings, quality controls, subtitles merging, and other functions can be reduced to entirely automated or minimally manual steps in accordance with a production-based process.


    Resource Manager

    The Resource Manager module manages multiple virtual resources that perform media functions in the workflow process, such as transcoders, encoders, editing systems, quality checks, playout systems, and metadata extraction. These resources can be third-party systems or systems built in-house.

    The module supports an efficient and dynamic way to automate complex workflows, so format encodings, quality controls, subtitles merging, and others can be reduced to entirely or partially automated steps in accordance with the production process.


    Metadata Enrichment

    HPE MWM enables the operators to enrich the metadata from external sources of Online movies and the On-Demand movies database. Furthermore, HPE MWM is able to import and export metadata in multiple formats needed from different sources and destination platforms by using the EBU core metadata specification as an internal format.


    Planning Manager

    HPE MWM has an optional planning and schedule module that enables the operator to define a license window for the title or content package. This module allows the programming department to specify when an asset needs be published onto a specific destination platform. A window will have multiple property parameters such as start date and time, end date and time, price of the title, elements included, publish date, and so on.


    HPE MWM tracks the windows created and allows the operator to track at any moment the material required on the title available for publishing. The operator will be notified when a window start date is about to be reached, alerting the operators to know that some necessary elements are missing.


    HPE MWM distributes any available asset based on the concept of a destination platform, which can represent any location (TV middleware, playout server, and others). Each of these destination platforms have distinctive and unique parameters specified by the operator

    to ensure the content is delivered in the right formats. HPE MWM uses normal transfer protocols such IP, FTP, or FTPS to copy assets into destination locations, and uses API integration to control these assets in the targeted systems.


    Playlist Parser

    The Playlist Parser module facilitate playout server operation. It allows service providers to define the TV channel and the playlist provider source and format so that the HPE MWM solution can receive the Playlist data and facilitate the integration with playout destination systems.


    Managing a Playlist for a grid of channels is an important task that involves the collection and aggregation of different source files with the programming of the channels. The Playlist parser module is completely integrated in the MWM Core product, leveraging the infrastructure, database, and look & feel of the Asset Management block. Managing assets or managing Playlist program events that relate to a program, movies, series, seasons, episodes, is similar and by sharing the content database, the enrichment performed for an asset is immediately propagated to the Playlist files and vice-versa.


    MWM greatly facilitate the manipulation of playlists by enabling the right mix between manual and automated tasks.


    The main features of the Playlist management module are the following:


    • Automatic ingestion of Playlist files from watch folder.
    • Support for multiple playlist format such as BXF and LST format.
    • Automatic assignment of program events to existing assets in the database, including metadata in different languages, images, casts (with images) and relationship with series, season, and episodes when applicable
    • Control of the Playlist to add, modify, or remove existing programs before publishing
    • Publishing of Playlist and media files associated through work order


    EPG Manager

    The EPG Manager allows service providers to define EPG data sources for live TV channel so that the HPE MWM solution can automatically grab any EPG information and aggregate for a more enriched content experience.

Figure 3 depicts the main functional components of the EPG Manager where several data sources are linked to the channel. Once data is ingested, it is validated for completeness and normalized to be saved into comparable sets.


The format mapping resides in the EPG Manager, which allows the solution to grab EPG information from many formats. XML, TXT, Excel, and metadata formats are included in the product, and additional and specific formats can be added easily by professional services. EPG Manager also includes transformation rules that normalize EPG information fields such as removing punctuation, extracting parameter from consolidated fields, and others.


After file ingestion, EPG Manager performs title search in HPE MWM asset database

to detect which title is already available. The result of the search for each input title is represented in the system as work items.


These work items are sets of records that allow operators to:


1. Construct the EPG schedule from HPE MWM database titles by accepting the work items

2. Enrich the asset metadata in HPE MWM database from the EPG information

3. Enter new titles in HPE MWM database from the EPG information


EPG Manager can handle movie or series, season, or episode content types. It also verifies the constructed schedule in order to confirm the integrity of the EPG schedule, reducing the number of issues related to gap, overlap, invalid characters, missing fields, and others. EPG Manager can automatically, or on demand, generate EPG XML and save it into the destination folders.


Community Manager

The HPE MWM Community Manager is the module for Audience News Gathering (ANG). ANG is aimed at increasing the audience number and engagement through social media and user-generated content collection and validation. The HPE ANG platform helps bloggers gain more visibility, editors to reach out to excellent contributors, have better fact checking, and the TV audience interact with their favorite shows. The HPE MWM Community Manager allows the community master, e.g. the editor, to handle contributors and their contents in one unique web based production environment.


A web app allows contributors to upload contents, send requests for live interaction, and watch episodes and specials.


Within the HPE MWM Community Manager, the community master visualizes the list of contributors sorted according to their social impact. He can define the ideal collaborator profile by selecting and weighting social KPIs as number of friends, pages, followers, and such. The Community Manager engine aggregates subscribers’ social data and suggest top-ranked collaborators according to the KPIs defined. For each subscriber it is possible to explore the data collected over social networks and visually compare the social behavior of each user with the average behavior of registered users.


Skype integration allows operators to easily call contributors. Active users can be located on the map and notify that they have a story to share, for example, they are participating to an event. Stories are geo localized and will be delivered to the community master on the HPE MWM Community Manager so that he can decide to call back the storyteller for live interaction. Community master can provide personal rate to each subscriber and assign roles that results in different user grants.


HPE MWM Community Manager is the place where is possible to review all the media contents that have been shared by contributors. Moreover, from Community Manager, editors handle episodes and specials and publish them on the mobile application.
