The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to groups of digital devices like industrial sensors, which collect and transmit data via the Internet.
The term "Internet of Things", the "IoT," describes the large and growing set of digital devices – now numbering in the billions – that operate across networks of potentially global scale. As opposed to the regular Internet (of people), the IoT is comprised only of smart sensors and other devices. Its uses include gathering operational data from remote sensors on oil platforms, collecting weather data, and controlling smart thermostats.

It enables one to have eyes and ears in remote places, constantly feeding information into applications and data stores.
