What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?
Internet of Things definition
The term "Internet of Things" describes the large and growing set of digital devices—now numbering in the billions—that operate across networks of potentially global scale. As opposed to the regular Internet (of people), the IoT is comprised only of smart sensors and other devices. Its uses include gathering operational data from remote sensors on oil platforms, collecting weather data, and controlling smart thermostats.

Why Internet of Things?
The IoT provides organizations with new, innovative ways to manage and monitor far-flung operations. It enables one to have eyes and ears in remote places, constantly feeding information into applications and data stores. The low cost of the "things" lets one observe and manage activities that were previously out of reach. With the Internet of Things, it is also possible to gather insights about events that were once invisible, e.g., correlating weather patterns with industrial output.

There are real success stories coming out of HPE IoT Innovation Labs. Make yours the next one.
This month marks the one-year anniversary of the grand opening of HPE’s Americas IoT Innovation Lab in Houston, Texas. This center, along with its sister APJ facility in Singapore and two new labs coming online in Geneva and Bangalore in the coming months, serve as collaborative environments where customers, HPE, and partners can develop, test, and assist in the deployment of advanced IoT and edge solutions.
Collaborative innovation is at the heart of what takes place at these IoT Innovation Labs, with the ultimate goal of invention and innovative products and solutions that deliver material business outcomes. In the post below, I am going to give an overview of how the collaborative process works and describe some of the unique features of the IoT Innovation Labs.
