Is a Management of Change (MoC) the right solution?

A person is seated on a couch, working on a laptop in a well-lit indoor environment with large windows.

Who engages Management of Change (MoC)?

Management of Change is for organizations that are:

  • Digitalizing their business or initiating digital initiatives.
  • Moving to a hybrid cloud environment.
  • Elevating their operating model.
  • Implementing new ways of working.
  • Introducing AI to their organization.

In short, MoC is for organizations that change their way of creating value using new technologies.

Why choose MoC?

When you engage the Management of Change team, you get:

  • A wealth of experience spanning over 35 years.
  • Access to a variety of experts, including solution architects, business consultants, project managers, and instructional designers.
  • Services tailored to your business requirements that can be deployed on a global level.
  • Help in reducing resistance, accelerating adoption of new technologies, and promoting innovative ways of working.

Management of Change consulting

Accelerating your transformation by empowering people, and asking yourself:

  • Will the way people work significantly change?
  • Will the way people communicate or work together change?
  • Will the change require different behaviors or new skills?
  • Is there a risk of losing productivity?
  • Is it likely that a significant number of employees will refuse to change?

If you can respond to one or more questions with "yes" then Management of Change is required.

Change impact analysis

The starting point of an organizational change process is a Change Impact Analysis (CIA).  This will allow the MoC team to build an initial MoC plan which serves as a foundation for all subsequent MoC activities.

Communication

The change plan and the MoC plan feed into the communication activities that stretch across the entire project lifecycle. It is important for the people impacted to know what is going to happen, and when, and what exactly is expected from them. Communication helps to build motivation and buy-in while also providing the necessary information to keep the project rolling.

Stakeholder engagement

Key stakeholder engagement is embedded within the communication process, ensuring they are informed and supportive of the transformation as needed.

Job roles and responsibilities

IT transformations lead to changes in processes and the job roles and responsibilities of the IT staff. Once the future operating model is defined, the concrete impact on the organization, its departments, teams and individuals will be further investigated. New roles will emerge while others may change or even disappear. These changes need to be fully understood and described, and the people impacted must be identified. This then forms a basis to identify skills gaps, leading to upskilling activities.

Culture change

Another main area to consider is culture change. IT transformations require a shift in mindset, breaking with some old habits and introducing new behaviors. As people need to start considering IT in end-to-end terms and collaborate across organizational silos, new practices are required. Common activities here are leadership coaching and running workshops within teams and across teams to inject and reinforce new ways of working. The culture change program feeds into the communication activities and often also requires upskilling.

Benefits of a well-implemented MoC program

Change Impact Analysis

The purpose of the Change Impact Analysis service is to assist clients in identifying obstacles to their team's success and coming up with strategies to overcome these hurdles as an integral part of the project.

The objective is to establish a shared view of the change and to understand what is needed to address the impact and deliver value.

This results in a high-level change plan and a set of recommendations to ensure that the required changes are thoroughly and smoothly implemented, and that the desired lasting benefits are achieved.

Change Impact Analysis activities

The main activity of a Change Impact Analysis is a workshop (on-site or remote), often split over two half-days, facilitated by two experienced HPE MoC consultants.

A person is presenting ideas on a whiteboard while two others are seated on a couch in a modern office environment.

Steps of the workshop

We start with building a clear joint view of the changes required to help ensure success by:

  • Understanding the business context that drives the change.
  • Getting a clear picture of the desired future state.
  • Identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Assessing the impact of the change on the various groups that are impacted.

We then enable the development of a high-level change plan by:

  • Identifying solutions to address the impact of the change.
  • Creating an action plan with concrete next steps.
