What is NAS?
NAS definition
NAS storage systems are networked appliances containing storage drives that provide file-based storage services to devices throughout a network. This architecture allows servers to avoid the task of serving data to other servers on the network (something that occurs with direct-attached storage (DAS). To a client OS, NAS appears to be a file system. In contrast, a storage area network (SAN) appears as a disk drive.

Why NAS?
NAS offers a performance advantage over DAS in a number of use cases, particularly when multiple devices need to access storage. This results from the ability to precisely tune an NAS device for file serving. Depending on network traffic factors and storage communication protocol preferences, NAS may also be more effective than SAN for some workloads.
