Betty Carolyn Russell Ball
ASHEBORO — Mrs. Betty Carolyn Russell Ball, 75, a resident of Randolph Health and Rehab, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Randolph Hospice Home. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington. There will be no formal visitation. WILSON — Sarah Haywood Daniels, 55, a resident of Wilson, formerly of High Point, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013.
Sarah was born March 6, 1957, in Guilford County, NC, to Woodroe Franklin Haywood and Dorothy June Sperry Haywood. She graduated from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, and later from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, with a Master’s Degree in Special Education. She taught at the Eastern NC School for the Deaf in Wilson for more than 20 years and was currently employed as an EC Specialist with the Nash/Rocky Mount School System. Sarah enjoyed reading, walking, going to the beach and working in her garden. She was preceded in death by her father.
Surviving are her mother, Dorothy Sperry Haywood of High Point; her twin sister, Mary Haywood Clark and her husband Clarence of Pittsboro; her brothers, David F. Haywood and his wife Gayle of Brentwood, TN, and J. Paul Haywood and his wife Donna of Kannapolis. Also surviving are her nieces, Amy Haywood Dutton and her husband Henry of Franklin, TN, Sara Haywood Walker and her husband Brent of Lexington, KY, and Laura Ann Haywood of Brentwood, TN; her nephews; Matthew Kurt Clark of Pittsboro and Benjamin Paul Haywood of Kannapolis.
A service to celebrate Sarah’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point, with Reverend Bruce Hartgrove officiating. Diane Virginia Doorley
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Diane Virginia Doorley, 76, resident of High Point died February 11, 2013, at Hospice Home @ High Point.
Mrs. Doorley was born February 19, 1936, in Rochester NY, a daughter of the late Roland Arnette and Ruth Bowman Yaeger. She was a graduate of Cornell University where she received a degree in Home Economics. A resident of this area for more than 12 years, she was an active member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, worked part time at Laurel Oak Children’s Center and volunteered with the High Point Regional Hospital Cancer Center Knitting Group. She loved knitting, quilting, sowing and reading. Prior to living in this area, she had worked over 15 years with Social Services in Georgia.
Surviving is a daughter, Kim Grissett of High Point; two sons, Stephen Carson Doorley of Clayton, GA, and Roland Paul Doorley and wife Cindy of Toccoa, GA; a brother, Roland Newell Yaeger and wife Chela of Rochester, NY; two grandchildren, Brandon and Haylee Grissett both of High Point; two nephews, Jon Yaeger and wife Suzanne, and Ted Yeager and wife Chrisa; and a niece, Alicia Booth and husband David.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. today at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joe Blankinship officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. LEXINGTON — Mr. Carl Gordon, 79, of Old Highway 64, passed away at Hinkle Hospice Home on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. He was born in Randolph County on January 25, 1934, the son of Ernest Lee Gordon and Lillie Mae Hicks Gordon. He worked in the furniture industry for many years and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 sisters and brothers. On July 2, 1955, he married Martha Trotter Gordon, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are one daughter, Vicky Gordon Williams and husband James of Thomasville; one sister, Evelyn Lambeth of Thomasville; one step-granddaughter, Christy Brinkley of Thomasville, and one step-great-granddaughter, Madison Brinkley of Thomasville.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church on Old Highway 64 with Rev. Bill Foust officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville. Leslie Huffines Jones
TRINITY — Leslie Michele Huffines Jones, 46, died Sunday in Burlington. Born August 16, 1966, in Belleville, Illinois, she is a daughter of Robert Hunter Huffines and Lynda Briggs Huffines of Trinity. She was a member of Green Street Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Leslie is survived by one son, Cameron Jones of Elon; sister Elissa Cox and husband Tim of Archdale; and a brother, Hunter Barton and wife Vicki of Birmingham, Alabama. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Caroline Cox, Kathryn Cox, Rachel Cox, Dustin Barton and Bailey Barton.
A memorial service to celebrate Leslie’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Green Street Baptist Church with the Reverend Frank Hensley officiating. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

HIGH POINT — Frances Gilliland Koon, 90, a resident of High Point, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013.
She was born on May 11, 1922, in Chatham County, NC, to the late Will T. Gilliland and Vantie Phillips Gilliland. Frances owned and operated Frances’ Drapery Shop for many years and had done showrooms during the furniture market for: Henredon Furniture, Bernhardts Furniture in Lenoir, and Alderman’s Studios of High Point. She made drapes for many families in the High Point area for a number of years. She was a former member of Grace Lutheran Church in High Point and later became a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church. Frances enjoyed needlepoint, cooking, and traveling, especially to the mountains in NC. She enjoyed meeting new friends and most of all, spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were her brothers; Frank, Wilbur, and Jack Gilliland; and her sister; Blanche Gilliland.
Surviving are her husband of 71 years, Hayne L. Koon of the home; her daughter; Charlotte Jones of High Point, her granddaughter, Catherine Wangerin and her husband Steve of Jacksonville, NC; her 2 great-granddaughters; Stephanie Nicole Wangerin and Amy Danielle Wangerin, both of Jacksonville, NC. Also surviving are a number of special nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate France’s life will be held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013, at St. Michael Lutheran Church with Reverend Robert W. Busch officiating. The family will see friends at the church on Saturday in the fellowship hall from 4:00 until 4:45 p.m. and other times at the residence. Beverly Bruss McLamb
HIGH POINT — Mrs. Beverly Bruss McLamb, 74, of High Point, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at High Point Regional with her family by her side.
Beverly was born December 27, 1938, in Milwaukie, WI, a daughter to the late Herbert Bruss and Margaret Clark Bruss. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. On January 5, 1957, she married the love of her life, Wilbert McLamb. Beverly was a member of Pilot View Baptist Church and was secretary of her Sunday school class. Amos Hosiery Mill was her former employer. Beverly was an avid collector of various things that she enjoyed. She was very selfless and positive ... and always put others needs before her own. She loved her church family and, most of all, was the best mother in the world! Beverly was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Willy McLamb of the home; a son, Troy McLamb and wife, Pamela of Trinity; a daughter, Tina Gibhardt and husband, Gregg of High Point; three grandchildren, Sam McLamb, Dylan Gibhardt and Morgan Gibhardt; and a great-grandson, Luke Adam McLamb.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, February 16, in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale with Pastor Bob Summers and Pastor John Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Memorial Park. Jacqueline Florence Moye
JAMESTOWN — Jacqueline Florence Moye died unexpectedly on Feb. 6 in High Regional Hospital following complications from surgery for a broken arm.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of Herbert C. Smith and Bernice Robinson Smith, Mrs. Moye moved to Jamestown in 2003. She graduated the University of Pittsburgh after earning a BSW and a MSW. She worked for 25 years as a clinical social worker at the University of Pittsburgh Health Systems. She was preceded in death by both parents, her husband, Claude Moye; two brothers, Kenneth and Herbert C. Jr.
Surviving are one daughter, Lona D. Cobb; two sons, H. Christopher Moye and Claude Moye Jr.; one granddaughter, Lona Rona’e Cobb; one niece, Regina Holley; and several cousins and friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Jacqueline’s life will take place in Pittsburgh, Pa. The date and time have not been set.
Ernestine Lookabill Penry
HIGH POINT — Ernestine Lookabill Penry (Memaw), born May 19, 1925, resident of Skeet Club Manor, High Point, died after a courageous battle with an extended illness on February 13, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Herbert Talmadge Penry, Jr.
Ernestine’s greatest accomplishments included her dedication to the Christian upbringing of her five children and the support of her husband, which enabled him to fully commit to his calling as a minister of the United Methodist Church. In honor of her commitment to his ministry and the sacrifices that she made, Rev. Penry established the Ernestine L. Penry Ministerial Scholarship Foundation in 1980. Since that time, more than $550,000 in scholarships have been provided to almost 136 ministerial students to equip them to do as Jesus Christ instructed, “to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth. ”Memaw” was a servant leader and committed her remaining years after the death of her husband to caring for every need of Brandon Walter (her angel).
She was fourth of nine children and is survived by four sisters, five children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Sisters include Alice Wofford, Billie Lawrence, Von Comer and Jeffie Nichols.
Children include Herbert T. Penry III and wife Judy, Clyde K. Penry and wife Wanda, Lydia P. Lyon and husband, Dr. Kenneth Lyon, Lou Walter, and husband, Paul, and Leah Penry Price and husband, Billy.
She was also the proud Memaw of eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren – Josh Lyon, Jennifer Lyon, Jay Penry, Jack Penry, Claudia Penry, Kendra Clutter, Brandon Walter, and Brooke Walter. The two great grand-children are Nate Lyon and Leon Penry. Deceased siblings include Carl Lookabill, Mildred Lanier, Van Lookabill, and Lee Lookabill.
A celebration of her life will be held at First United Methodist Church, 512 N. Main St., High Point, NC, on Saturday, February 16, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Chris Fitzgerald, Rev. Clyde Penry and Rev. Dr. Kenneth Lyon. The family will receive guests from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the church chapel. Internment will take place at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Thomasville, NC.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Piedmont for the tenderness and dignity that they gave to Ernestine.

Pastor Barbara Johnson Wright
HIGH POINT — On Monday, February 11, 2013, our loving Solider of God Barbara Griffin Johnson Lassiter Wright was called home. She was born on January 7, 1942, in High Point, NC, to the late Lester Lee Griffin and Genola Lula Hall Griffin.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Jackson and Ellia McKiver.
She was a graduate of William Penn High School Class of 1960. Barbara also graduated from High Point College in 1981 with a BA degree in Sociology. In 1983, she received a Master of Science degree in Adult Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University. She worked as an ABE Teacher for GTCC and was also employed as a Social Worker II for Guilford County DSS.
Barbara was founder of Blessed Redeemer Holiness Church. She was an ordained minister and served as Bishop, and later as overseer of the Holiness Church United, Inc. She was an inactive member of Delta Sigma Thea Sorority.
She leaves to cherish her memories three sons, Michael Andre Griffin, Maurice Antoine Brown, Mark Leander Brown; one daughter, Andrea Trevette Brown Garrison, all of High Point, NC; three step-children, Evangeline Johnson, Jonathan Johnson and Calvandus Lassiter Jr.; 12 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 12:30 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel, 1810 Brockett Avenue. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens, Jamestown, NC.
