Marjorie Lee Pegram Beck

December 17, 1923- January 21, 2013

ORLANDO, FL – Margie Beck was born December 17, 1923, in High Point, NC, to Lula and Bynum Pegram. She was the oldest daughter of four, graduating from High Point High School. In 1942 she married Rayvon Beck in Meridian, MS, at the outset of World War II. After the war, Margie and Rayvon lived in Kansas, Louisiana and Ohio, settling finally in Orlando, Florida, in 1951. Florida was then a new frontier for many and together the family forged a new life with lots of hope and promise.

Margie has been a widow from 34 years since Rayvon died from lung cancer at the age of 59 after retiring from the Air Force. She took care of their home in Audubon Park over five decades while Orlando grew around them and changed into a bustling destination region. With a love of gardening and landscaping, Margie maintained faithfully what she called their ‘plantation.’

Margie is survived by two daughters, Patricia McNeil (husband William) of Greensboro, NC, and Peggy Kinder (husband Steve) of Gold Canyon, AZ; five grandchildren, Kristina Bailey, currently in Amman, Jordan; Angie Bailey of Raleigh, NC; Rob Milstead of Alpharetta, GA; Steven Kinder of Cocoa, FL; Shelle Beane of Gilbert, AZ; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters and their spouses: Dot Culler (husband Roy) of High Point, NC, Lib Walker (husband Paul) of Burlington, NC, and Betty Herring (husband Jack) of Boulder, CO.

Thanks beyond all thanks to the ministries of First United Methodist Church in Winter Park for over 50 years, most especially for the care given to Margie by Gary Rideout, Minister of Congregational Care, and Betsy McKeeby, Parish Nurse.

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 25, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at First United Methodist Church of Winter Park. The family asks that memorial gifts be given to the Health and Wholeness Ministry of the church, 125 N. Interlachen Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789. Interment will follow the service at Glen Haven Cemetery. A separate service for friends and family in North Carolina to remember Margie will be held at High Point Friends Meeting in March.
