RANDLEMAN — Theodore William Bame, 84, formerly of Randleman, died Friday January 4, 2013. Funeral will be Thursday January 10, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. at Old Union United Methodist Church. THOMASVILLE — Mr. Donald Earnest Beckerdite Jr., 54, a resident of Thomasville, passed away on Monday, January 7, 2013.

DENTON — Mrs. Virginia Lee Blackwell, age 81, of S. Snider Street, Denton, NC, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013.

Miriam DeVincenzo

GREENSBORO — Mrs. Miriam Sotomayor DeVincenzo, age 62, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, at her residence.

A funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Life Community Church. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Salisbury National Cemetery.

Miriam is survived by her husband Stephen DeVincenzo; three daughters Jennifer, Stephanie and Christina; parents Jose Sotomayor and Belen Velez (Victor); and sister, Arlene Hernandez.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time.

DENTON — Mrs. Annie Buie Gallimore, 76, of Denton Road, Denton, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Thomasville Medical Center. A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 10, at Denton Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

 

Mary Ruth Holliday

HIGH POINT — Mrs. Mary Ruth Holliday went home to Jesus on January 7, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Mary was born on August 19, 1923, in Wythe County, VA, to William and Lilley Coley. Mary grew up in Max Meadows, VA. She married John Edward Holliday in Speedville, VA, February 28, 1942. They were happily married for 42 years. Mary was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family more than herself. She was a wonderful daughter, mother and friend. Most of all, she loved traveling, bird watching and drinking a good cup of coffee. Mary was a God-fearing woman who did read her Bible daily. Mary is survived by her four children, Samuel Holliday of Granite Quarry, NC, William Holliday of Dale City, VA, Edward Holliday of Max Meadows, VA, and Mary Byrd of High Point, NC; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John Holliday on May 10, 1984, and her daughter, Myrtle Lantz on February 28, 1990.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Pastor Chris Lanning officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be held at a later date at Quantico National Cemetery as announced. Rita Needham 

EFLAND — Rita Jane Ward Needham passed away Sunday, January 6, at Duke Medical Center after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Howard Ward and Mae Dorsett Ward, and was born on November 3rd, 1933, in Thomasville, NC. From the time she was born, she was full of boundless energy.

As a student at Fair Grove School she was involved in nearly every activity a small school could offer. After graduating high school, she attended High Point College where she received her degree in education. While at High Point, Rita met a young farm boy, Willis Huston Needham, who became the love of her life, and she his.

She taught at Kern Street School, Fair Grove Elementary and E. Lawson Brown Junior High. She loved young people and loved teaching them science. Her students to this day remember Roy G. Biv — the colors of the visible light spectrum. She also loved to point out the constellations on cold winter nights. To her, the earth, the skies and the oceans were God’s revelation of His love.

During her retirement, she continued to care for children and was a nanny for her beloved granddaughter, Jolie, as well as the children of Donna and John Kramer. She became known as Nannay to them.

She loved music, she loved to sing, she loved to travel, garden and read. The world will be a little less fun without her.

While living in Thomasville, she was a faithful member at Heidelberg United Church of Christ and was a member of the consistory, was a dedicated choir member and a Sunday School teacher.

Her parents preceded her in death as well as a special niece, Rosemary Ward. She is survived by her beloved husband, Will Needham of Efland, NC; one son, Hugh Needham, also of Efland; a daughter, Jane Needham Day (Patrick) of Carrboro; granddaughters, Jennifer Needham (Thomasville) and Jolie Day (Greensboro); one brother, Charles Ward (Thomasville); and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her very much. Her work and love will ripple across life’s waters for years to come.

A service of celebration and remembrance will be held at Heidelberg United Church of Christ, Salem Street, on Friday, Jan 11, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the church. Memorials may be directed to the general fund at Heidelberg United Church of Christ.

Virginia Starling Overman

MANTEO — Virginia Starling Overman, 89, passed away January 7, 2013. She was born July 11, 1923, in Rocky Mount, NC, to Arthur L. and Elizabeth Starling. She graduated from Rocky Mount High School.

Virginia moved to High Point, NC, in 1993 and joined Deep River Baptist Church on Eastchester Drve where she became the church pianist. Virginia is survived by her son, Wally Overman and wife, Ruth of Manteo; granddaughter, Kelly Farless and husband, Tim of Cary; grandson, Walter B. “Snapper” Overman of Cary; and her great-grandsons, Grayson and Parker Farless of Cary.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. A reception will follow.

Danny Collins Scott

SPENCER — Mr. Danny Collins Scott, 65, of Third St., passed Tuesday, January 1, 2013, in Charlotte, NC.

Funeral will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Guiding Light Missionary Baptist Association Convention Center at 308 S. Boundary St. East Spencer, NC, with family visitation a half-hour before the service. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Service, Lexington.

 

George Ralph Swink

THOMASVILLE — Mr. George Ralph Swink, 53, of 1151 W. Green Street, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at Thomasville Medical Center. He was born in Davidson County on September 15, 1959, the son of Carl White Swink and Blanche Cranford Swink. He was self-employed as a commercial industrial painter and owned G.R. Swink’s Painting Company. He was of the Baptist faith and was a former assistant pastor with Victory Baptist Church in High Point. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Edith Mashburn; and three brothers, Carlon G.C. Swink, Ricky Lee Swink and Raymond Ashley Swink. On June 10, 1979, he married Connie Wallace Swink and they were married for 33 years. She survives of Thomasville.

Also surviving are one daughter, Ashley Spears and husband Jason of Lexington; one son, George (Little Man) Raft Swink of Polkton, NC; four sisters, Rhoda Everhart of Lenoir, NC, Peggy Loman of High Point, Shirley Smith of Archdale, and Sandy Pope and husband Ricky of Archdale; three brothers, Steve Swink and wife Margaret of Thomasville, Donnie Swink and wife Pat of Thomasville, and Wayne Swink and wife Bonnie of Sunset Beach; and three grandchildren, Serena Marie Swink, Joseph Carl Swink, both of Thomasville, and Daniel Isaac Spears of Lexington.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan 11, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. in J. C. Green and Sons Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Michael Bowers and Rev. Hillis Burton officiating. Interment will follow in the Swink family cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of his brother, Steve Swink, 1151 W. Green Street, Thomasville. Gaither E. “Buck” Trogdon

RANDLEMAN — Gaither Earl “Buck” Trogdon, age 90, of 317 McCollum St, Randleman died Sunday, January 6, 2013, at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.

Mr. Trogdon was born May 2, 1922, the son of Fletcher L. and Maude Jarrell Trogdon.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 10, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman. Funeral service will be Friday, January 11, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, Randleman, with Rev. Mark Jordan officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro, NC.

Buck was a native of Virginia but was raised in High Point, NC. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII as staff seargent in the 8th Air Force stationed in England where he was a crew member on a B-17 bomber in the “Flying Fortress.” He worked for many years delivering laundry for High Point Laundry and retired as a security guard from a hospital in Virginia. He was proud to be an American and enjoyed many Saturday nights cuttin’ up and cuttin’ a rug at the VFW Hut in Randleman. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Jerri Hodge; brother, PVT Basil Jett Trogdon; sisters, Marie Bush and Manzeline “Dude” Smith; nephews, Earl Stanley Smith, Jack Sheldon; stepson, Neal Christopher and stepdaughter: Jerri Saylor.

He is survived by a daughter and her partner, Michelle Trogdon and Jane Hege of High Point, NC; former wife, Mary York of Asheboro, NC; stepdaughter, Carolyn Tayloe of VA; daughter-in-law, Linda Christopher; grandsons, Neal Anthony Christopher,  Mark and Tim Tayloe; granddaughter and her husband, Heather and Dray Asbell; great-grandson: Gavin Asbell; nieces and nephews, Danny Smith, Debbie Hill, Steve Hodge, Trudy Jackson, Rodney Trivette, Beth Cecil, Cindy Miller, Mike Hodge, David Hodge and a host of friends at the VFW Hut of Randleman.
