DAVIDSON COUNTY – Many people have trouble getting their prescription drugs because of higher costs and less medical coverage.

United Way of Davidson County hopes a new partnership will make that process easier.

The United Way has partnered with FamilyWize Partnership to offer free prescription drug discount cards. Along with 800 other United Way organizations across the country, the discount card is provided to families without health insurance or who need medicine not covered by an insurance plan.

Families can save as much as 30 percent on the cost of prescription medication. The United Way of Davidson County is distributing cards to the 31 human service agencies that receive funding from United Way and to other social service organizations in Davidson County. The card also can be printed from the FamilyWize Web site, www.familywize.org.

There are no age, income or usage restrictions for the card. Card holders can use it as many times as they would like and there is no waiting to get the card. The cost of the prescription will be the discount price with the FamilyWize card or the pharmacy’s usual and customary retail price, whichever is lower.

“Too many people have insufficient coverage, no prescription coverage, or need medications not covered by their insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, or VA benefits,” said Lee Jessup, president of the United Way of Davidson County.

Jessup said 55,000 pharmacies nationwide agreed voluntarily to accept the FamilyWize Partnership discount cards.

Dan and Susan Barnes established the FamilyWize Community Service Partnership in fall 2005. They started by giving prescription drug cards to the family centers in Bethlehem, Pa. They had heard of families in the area who were having trouble paying for the medicine they needed.

“We work to reduce the cost of medicine for children, families and individuals by $100 million. We believe that stronger, healthier and happier people make healthier, better communities and a stronger, gentler nation,” Barnes said.

They invited local and national companies to provide free assistance to people who can’t afford their medications.

Now, more than 25,000 organizations, agencies, pharmacies and individuals have joined together to reduce the cost of medicine.

There are also two other FREE prescription drug discount cards available: one from www.USADrugPlan.org and www.USACAP.org (Community Assistance Program). BOTH of these cards offer mail-order prescriptions, cards for PETS and the cards NEVER EXPIRE, which is not the case with the Familywize card.

USACAP.org will also help you raise money for your organization. Your organization receives 75 cents each time the card with your special ID# is used. This is an excellent fund raiser program that involves very little work for the organization in need of funding.

USACAP.org will tell you about how you can private label the card to your organization.

It's your decision. Familywize.org is a for profit company that has never shared a dime of profits with United Way. Nor are they listed with the Better Business Bureau.

USACAP.org offers far more...

Community Assistance Program (CAP) is an outreach program setup and funded by National Benefit Builders Inc., and USADrugPlan. CAP was set up in response to the many requests NBBI gets for assistance to the needy. NBBI is a for-profit company, established in 1994, with an A rating from the Better Business Bureau.

NBBI provides discount health, dental, vision and prescription products to the general public. It has become well-known that NBBI offers free discount RX cards and rather than having the staff at NBBI fielding questions and sending out these cards, Community Assistance Program was established just to take care of these requests, and to distribute the discount cards to as many needy people as possible.
