After listening to the comments directed toward President Obama being light skinned and that he has no African-American dialect, I ask you: What has all that got to do about solving our problems?

Every week, it’s usually something about race.

Don’t we have other things better to do?

We are in a recession here. Yet, we seem to keep making it a race war. Millions are out of work, health care stinks, people are homeless and hungry.

It appears that if as much time was used for trying to solve our problems as trying to see where one can downgrade the other, we could get something done for the economy.

I’m sick of this racial business every week.

People are becoming so sensitive. They are like a chicken hawk sitting on a tree branch looking for someone to say a racial remark so they can start bickering like children.

Get over it.

Let’s do something constructive for a change.

Let’s see, hear much more about Native American history

I have always wondered why we have never set aside a day to honor the memory of the millions of men, women and children – the Native Americans, who died at the hands of our ancestors.

Over and over, we hear the stories of the Holocaust survivors, the stories of the men and women who fought and died for this country.

We hear about the hard lives and unjust treatment of slaves. We hear about the atrocities committed and the devastation caused by war.

But we do not hear the voices, the stories of atrocities committed on our own land by our own people against the Native Americans.

Why is that?

Taking the land of Native Americans and force marching them across the North American continent was the epitome of greed carried out by government.

We had no right to kill the Native Americans, no right to force them from their land.

This was their land, this was their home. We were the invaders, we were the terrorist.

Maybe this would be a good time to put some reality in our American history.

We need a day to remind us of the millions of Native Americans condemned to a harsh life or death so our forefathers could establish our land of the free.

Actually, my response demonstrates skepticism towards the author of the letter. I know quite a bit about American history, including the Trail of Tears. I stand by my points. You don't know who the "Indians" took their land from, but the fact remains that they took it from somebody, as all humans have done throughout history. The people of our country have done some terrible things, but I think it's a bad idea to single out our country for doing something that all countries have done.

The issue of Palestine is complicated by the League of Nations, the UN, and the Arab states. Imagine if your family had to endure rocket attacks and suicide bombings that were financed by people who hate your existence. Would you get up and walk away? Where would you go?

You're right that we live in the greatest country that has ever been. Although far from perfect, we do get a lot of things right - but there is no guarantee of success.

Since you brought up casinos... that is one of the most corrupt ideas that ever came out of Washington (or wherever it came out of).

Mike,

He does have a point here and your responses demonstrate a lack of understanding of our history here. I am still learning everyday as I am sure you are. I know very little about this but what I do know is that this country did some questionable things in regards to the aborigine.

Google trail of tears, you will find some legit sites. That’s a pretty good start. As for who the Indian took their land from I don’t know. When Europeans began moving inland the Indian was smart enough to see what was happening and tried to assimilate in to this new culture. They bought land, deeded their names, some tracks as large as 3000 acres in Georgia, Carolinas and Florida. They paid taxes, had prosperous farming operations, they even bought and owned African slaves.

This was in the 1740’s thru 1860. It basically was the right of us white folks to just take away land and inventory of any Indian. This was justified by a Supreme Court ruling that said our right of discovery trumped their right of occupancy. We just up and took their belongings, even when they had a deed proving ownership.

Our actions were sinful. There are similarities of what we did then and the state of Israel has done with the Palestinians. Imagine if your family worked a farm for four hundred years and some religious group shows up and says God deeded this land to us, please move on. Hmm, think the Palestinians would be satisfied with a couple casinos? Might be to late for that one.

This is the greatest country on the planet, the main reason is that even when we do something wrong and we do, we eventually do it right.

I can go on, we could drink a lot of beer chatting over this but that bed is calling.

True, and it's always a liberal Democrat bringing it up.

Does David Willett care about Native Americans? Or is he just another liberal who loathes his own country?

I agree that Americans should know more our history, but let's teach all of it, not just the parts that liberals can use to make America look bad.

We took the land of the native American? Who exactly were these "native Americans?" And who did they take the land from?

If we're going to go back to find out who took what from whom, let's go back more than a few hundred years. Humans have been taking things from other humans from day one.

Right now Obama and his cronies are trying to take more of our freedom than I'm willing to give.

So if we're going to have a day that honors people who've had important things taken from them, such as land and freedom, then let's include everyone.
