I have been reading your stories on former Sheriff Gerald Hege.

Thank you for letting people write the paper about him. As for me, I am 100 percent for him.

I hope all the people forget the wrong he did and think about all the good he did.

He did a lot more good. And the one thing he did do that most people in office don’t do was he did not lie about what he did. He did face up to his wrong like a man. So I hope all the people will give him another chance to prove he is a better man now than ever, and he will keep us all safe. Hege is not the kind of man to sit in an office and let his men do the work. He is a man who goes out and helps his men.

And Hege does not need a gun. I bet he never used his gun anyway.

He has men there with guns to use if they need to. I hope he gets back in and I hope he has a 101 team all dressed in black.

Go Hege go. We are all there for you.

We’ve been paying Hege since he left office

In a recent story, there was a quote from Gerald Hege in an article in which Hege used the wrong word for what took place when he was convicted several years ago. The word was “resign.” He did not resign, he was allowed to retire. And we’ve been paying him ever since.

You had an article about him a few weeks ago in which y’all used that same word twice. Then WFDD (NPR station) quoted your article. I’d like to see this corrected in order that the public does not get a mistaken impression.

Editor’s note: Former Sheriff Gerald Hege did resign his office as sheriff. According to Davidson officials, he also was eligible to begin drawing retirement benefits for which he had qualified.

We need some new ideas, not more ideology

Wisdom: Knowledge applied for the benefit of all. Medicare for all is fair, achievable and wise. Capitalism and free markets have well-known limits. And, neither is mentioned in the Constitution. Neither is incorporation, political parties, family or most of the crap espoused over the last 30+ years (The Saint Reagan Error).

I’m an independent, but not a TeaBag. I support balanced government, but I know incumbent jobs are not secure over the next 10-15 years. We need new ideas, not ideology. We need more small company innovation (less Wal-Mart opportunism), more Main Street involvement (less Wall Street greed), more compassion (less walled-off religiousity) and more long-term sustainability (less Wally NASCAR example).

I know D.C. is provincial and you probably get caught up in the day-to-day self-importance of the inhabitants. But, they’re going to have to show some rugged individualism to lead the USA into the 21st century and beyond. Good luck!

Allowing Obama to increase national debt will destroy us

Can you see the relationship between these two quotations?

The first is frequently read and heard. George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember history are condemned to repeat it.”

The second is rarely brought to light, and certainly not by career politicians. In “Mein Kampf” Adolf Hitler wrote, “If you wish the sympathy of broad masses, then you must tell them the crudest and most stupid things.”

A few years later, the citizens of Germany awoke to the realization that Hitler had been absolutely correct but only after they had allowed him to totally highjack their country and drive it to ruin. Fundamentally, this was achieved by one single man while millions passively and silently watched and went on with their own everyday lives.

We are frequently being bombarded with pleas for America to wake up. Keep this in mind: That suggestion is impossible; America is a country. Instead, we individual Americans must wake up. We must not repeat the tragic mistake German citizens made in the 1930s. If we continue to believe the obviously “most stupid things” we are currently being told from Washington, D.C., we will very soon become the “broad masses” who must obey the dictates of those making these statements.

Many examples could be cited, but one has to look no farther than our current national debt and how it is poised to be gigantically increased. Our alarm clock is ringing and there is no time left for the snooze button. Wake up and act.

No need for apology, I do not take anyone's comments personally. I make statements on some things, but there is nobody that I hate. I have to love everybody, but I don't have to break bread with them.

All veterans remain close to me. It seems that all vets have a certain bond. All of our Honor Guard team give up a lot of time and furnish his own gas to perform services at cemetaries. I am 66 and we have members that are in their 70's and 80's out there performing their duties. I usually do about 2 to 5 a week. It really makes you tear up sometimes when the family, that you don't even know, come up and give you a hug or shake your hand, and just say thank you. That is all i need. I have been observing the funerals for the last few months and it seems that there are hardly any young people that attend. I guess that they don't care, but we care.

Thanks for the good words, makes me feel better.

snuffbox1, Glad to see their can be some common ground. Previously (2or3 weeks ago) I posted that I didn't 'like or respect' you. I apologize for that statement. To be honest I probaly wouldn't like you(based on your post's)but after reading how you are involved with the Veterans I do respect you and regret 'some' of my previous posts.

Revots, I was shocked by your post and was ready to respond, but after reading it I truly agree with you. I see that a lot around Wal-mart, from whites and hispanics. What gets me is that they pull up right in front of the door, ignoring the no parking area sign, with big suv's. Maybe they are someone's else's, but it makes you wonder.

By the way, I have got you beat, I have a 97 windstar, which I have just received a recall on.

Can you believe that? Almost 13 years old and just now getting a recall notice?

Getting back to the sugject, people really need help, and deserve help, let's give it to them. But the ones that are abusing the system should be busted, and should be checked out thouroughly before giving them assistance. But there is no monoriting, and that is where the problem lies.

I do not believe that I am the most "enlightened" person in the world. Not even close. But there are some whackadoodles to whom I feel far more enlightened, and Herr Hughes and Shirley are two of them. There are also some liberals that I wonder about.

« mike27282 wrote on Thursday, Nov 26 at 04:35 PM »
Everyone has psychiatric issues except for CBW. Wouldn't it be nice if we all were as enlightened as CBW believes he is? There would be peace in the world! There would be no hunger! No poor! Bipartisanship!!!! Wasn't there a Twilight Zone episode like that?

« CBW1972 wrote on Thursday, Nov 26 at 01:17 PM »
In all seriousness, does Shirley have some psychiatric issues?

snuffbox1, you will love(or hate, depending on how you look at it) this story. On Tuesday I went to Schulers Meats off old 85 to purchase a shoulder that I'm gonna smoke Saturday. The lady in front of me was 'stocking up' on meats and paid for $65.00 worth of stuff with her EBT card. I didn't give it a second thought until I got back out to the parking area and saw her loading her groceries in her car. Her car (or the car she was driving) was a relatively new ('04-'06 ?) Mercedes. The car was really sharp, with the nice wheels and everything.

Now, maybe it was not her car. Maybe she borrowed the car from someone, but that seems unlikely...So I just got in my '96 Ford and headed home thinking that it's not right that I bust my ass everyday while some can qualify for Govt' assistance and drive a new Mercedes.

The problem is the people who abuse the system, like the ones you often write about. I don't know what percentage of people are 'gaming' the system, but there has to be a way to crack down on these people while still giving help to people who truly need it.Just to be clear, I am in favor of the Government giving people a helping hand when they need it(truly need it) but it should not be a way of life and you damn sure shouldn't qualify for food Stamps if you can afford a Mercedes.
« snuffbox1 wrote on Thursday, Nov 26 at 09:55 AM »
Shirley, I agree, There are some of us that have worked all our lives, and paid into the system, out of every paycheck. We have not worked "under the table" per say, to avoid paying our fair share. We have served our duty in the military, proudly, I might say, and have never tried to cheat on our taxes.

But like you say, there are generations of people that have been on the system, drawing their checks and food stamps and wic's and every other free thing they can get. There will be many heading out today to get his free turkey dinner because it is available to the needy, and stopping by the convenient store on his way home, to buy a lottery ticket. If you are needy, that is one thing, but there are so many that are not, and abuse the system.

There are people that take orders from others and head off to the groecery store and fill the orders in exchange for monies to purchase his smokes and alcoholic beverages. There are many that claim to be single parents, just to receive monies from us taxpayers, and baby daddy or hubby lives right there at home with them. And when you report them to officials, they say they don't have the manpower to investigate every situation.

There are people on the system that live in nice homes, have boats, motorcycles, and even beach houses. I know that for a fact. This kind of thing is what is irritating to me. They put their items in other people's names to slip through the system.

Our politicians, like you say, are a bunch of crooks, and are a den of thieves. They sit back and dictate to us on how we should live, and tax us to the hilt to recover all the blunders they have done. But you know, one day they will have to answer to a higher power for their wrongdoings. They will leave their wealth to the next generation to continue with the same thing.

But all and all I am proud of our American Soldier who is fighting for our freedom, in the US and overseas. Whether they are in a war zone or working in an office somewhere, I salute them today, on this Thanksgiving. God bless you soldier, and thank you for serving our country for me and my family. I care.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: "WAKE UP, AMERICA" IS A figure of speech of which I'm well aware of! Keeping in mind that Taxpayers (not politicians) are the Americans I'm concerned about, since they are the ones that's paying into the System, so you old geezers can draw your checks (some worked and are entitled to them - some have never worked, but still draw checks they're not entitled to)! So, in the future, I'll make sure I say "WAKE UP, TAXPAYERS!"

TAXPAYERS WOULD LIKE ANSWERS TO THIS-Why would politicians want to spend billions of dollars taken from insurance, drug, hospitals and

the small business owners, to run for an office that pays $200,000.00 -?

NOTE: """Lying""" supposedly will get politicians impeached , then why hasn’t ninety-five percent of

politicians been impeached? Let's sell them a one-way ticket to Gitmo, take all their assets to pay off the

trillions they’ve borrowed without Taxpayers consent? Six decades later and America is bankrupt

with these ‘corrupt, greedy, lying bunch of ‘blood-sucking ticks’, still in office, still drawing big

salaries and retirements, working on the same ‘programs/ healthcare’ for years. They have nothing

better to do to justify the bigs bucks they steal from Taxpayers, as it’s obvious none of them know

what they’re doing nor care. This is why their favorite saying is “I’ll check on this and get back to

you!” This brings another thought to Taxpayers minds, if the Insurance, Drug companies,

Hospitals, and Medical professionals stop ‘paying the politicians to run for office, maybe the

‘Politicians License to Steal’ will come to a screeching halt!

Politicians take billions from insurance, drug companies, healthcare professionals and what few

businesses are left. This is why Taxpayers can't afford insurance, hospitals, let alone medications.

Passing of Healthcare is another POWER GRAB and will finish bankrupting America. Fraud and

bankrupting of social security, medicare and medicaid should tells folks that government run

programs have never worked for Taxpayers, just for Politicians!

Insurance and Drug companies should give their insured, that’s paid them big bucks for years, all

their money back. Folks, the Taxpayer that’s paid $200.00 to $750.00 monthly, would be entitled to

several million for each person. Just think, we wouldn’t need them at all! What fools we’ve been

letting these ‘blood-sucking ticks’ tell us that ‘Taxpayers have to spread the wealth around!’

Where is politicians ‘wealth they’re spreading around?’ GUESS WHAT, AIN'T NONE!

"Reasonable" - the problem is that liberals are not reasonable.

« CBW1972 wrote on Wednesday, Nov 25 at 11:38 AM »
Anybody supporting Gerald Hege is simply out of their mind. Period. It's that simple.
« CBW1972 wrote on Wednesday, Nov 25 at 11:37 AM »
Most liberals (and moderates like me, for that matter) have no interest in taking away guns used for hunting or personal protection -- so long as they're reasonable weapons and ammunition. Shotguns and handguns are okay, but folks simply don't need armor-piercing bullets and fully automatic weapons. Leave assault rifles to the military and police SWAT teams.

The "the're trying to take away your guns" argument is simply bogus, although it is a great fundraising tool for the NRA and the Republican Party.

What planet is James Burnette living on? Wally NASCAR? Saint Reagan? Walled-off religiosity? Huh?

Independent, but not a teabag? I smell a liberal.

Well known limits of capitalism and free markets, but no mention of the well known limits of government? Yep, he's a liberal.

Excellent letter by Bill Michal! There's only one reason why what happened in Nazi Germany can't happen now in America... the 2nd Amendment. And of course, liberals want to take away our guns.
