Central defeats Ragsdale for spot in state tennis playoffs

High Point Central took the second state playoff berth from the Piedmont Triad 4A Cnference by topping Ragsdale in a tie-breaker match Monday at Southwest Guilford.

Eva Ellenburg, Emily Adams, Rachel Shelton and Meredith Field won singles matches for the Bison (15-4). Kristen Biddle and Ellenburg won one doubles match while Field and Bailey Weston took another.

Central will play at the No. 1 seed from the Central Piedmont Conference on Oct. 15. The Bison will next see action today in the opening rounds of the PTC individual tournament at Southwest.

 

VOLLEYBALL

HP CENTRAL DEF. GRIMSLEY

HIGH POINT – High Point Central picked up one of its biggest victories of the year as it upended Grimsley in five sets on Monday. Game scores were 25-22, 17-25, 26-24, 12-25, 15-9.

Hayden Harris dished 49 assists for the Bison, while Sadie Weston had 11 kills and Ashley McDonald contributed 15 kills and five aces.

Central (6-12) goes to Glenn today.

 

WESLEYAN DEF. CALDWELL

GREENSBORO – Wesleyan came from a set behind to edge  host Caldwell 25-22, 16-25, 12-25, 25-19, 15-11 on Monday.

Leaders for the  Trojans included Brittany Goodson (11 digs, nine kills), Megan Woodward (seven digs, eight kills), Taylor Michalski (17 kills) and Taylor Boaras (10 kills, five blocks).

Wesleyan (13-4) plays host to Greensboro Day today at 5:30 p.m.

 

BISHOP DEF. N. DAVIDSON

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness swept visiting North Davidson 25-23, 25-11, 25-19 on Monday.

Leaders for Villains included Julia Brown in kills with 15, Jessica Brandewie in assists with 21, Delaney Findling and Tia Cuppuccio in aces with three each, and Julie Dorosiewicz in assists with 28.

Bishop won the junior varsity match, 27-25 and 25-18.

 

WHEATMORE DEF. LEDFORD

TRINITY — Wheatmore swept visiting Ledford 25-13, 25-16, 25-18 in a nonconference match Monday.

Kelly Davis had 34 assists, while Georgia Garrison had 12 kills and six digs, and Kathryn Johnson had 11 kills and seven digs for the Warriors (18-1).

Davey Albertson also had seven kills, while Casey Hawkins had six digs.

Wheatmore plays again Tuesday at Andrews.

W. DAVIDSON 4, THOMASVILLE 2 (OT)

TYRO – Irving Ignacio Diaz and Luis Rodriguez scored for Thomasville in a 4-2 overtime loss to Central Carolina 2A foe West Davidson on Monday.

Tony Gonzalez had an assist for the Bulldogs (5-11, 2-4 CCC).

 

S. GUILFORD 1, ASHEBORO 1

GREENSBORO  — Oscar Jasso of Southern Guilford scored off a pass from Juan Jarquin as the Storm battled to a 1-1 tie with Asheboro in Mid-Piedmont 3A action on Monday.

Cesar Ruiz grabbd six saves in goal for Southern, which improved to 5-9-4, 2-3-3 MPC and plays host to Ledford today.
