Cowboys rout Raiders
Terrell Leach scored 31 points — including several highlight-reel dunks — while Ben Ferguson had 17 and K.J. Langley added 10 to lead the Cowboys (3-0), who went on an 11-1 run midway through the second to stretch a five-point lead to 15 and led 46-28 at halftime.
“I was pleased with my guys overall,” Southwest coach Guy Shavers said. “I thought we got a little bit stagnant there for a while, but I liked the way when they cut it to nine that we were able to come right back and I think we went on a 12-0 run. So that was nice to be tested there.
“(Andrews) is just as athletic — if not more — than we are. If were to go out and pressure them, I think that’s what they’d want to do. So, we sort of sat back and tried to make them make some decisions. And I thought that helped us get back and go right at them.”
The Red Raiders (0-4) did rally in the fourth quarter, pulling within nine, but couldn’t pull closer as the Cowboys finished the game strong. Bennie Butler scored 28 to lead Andrews while Chris Eatmon followed with 20.
“It was definitely tough (getting out of the early hole), and I think once we did, we ran out of gas,” said assistant coach David Robinson, who was filling in for head coach Cleaver Rennie while he was at a teaching conference.
“Once you dig yourself a hole, it’s going to take a lot of effort and a lot of intensity to get out. It’s very tiresome, very fatiguing, and I think that’s what happened to us. … It was very good, though, to see that we don’t have guys who quit. It’s very easy to get down, but our guys kept fighting.”
Both teams play again Tuesday, with Andrews visiting Thomasville and Southwest hosting Western Guilford.
