Hood powers Cougars past Bison
Charlotte Catholic scored back-to-back touchdowns to close the first half and open the second in beating visiting High Point Central 42-21 on Friday night in the second round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs.
Germaine Pratt finished with 74 yards and two TDs receiving, while Jamiel Mack had 93 yards rushing and two TDs passing to lead the No. 5 Bison (9-4). Elijah Hood finished with 306 yards and four TDs rushing, while Ryan Miller added a rushing TD and passing TD to lead the No. 4 Cougars (11-2).
With the game tied 14-14, Charlotte Catholic drove 76 yards on 10 plays, capped by Miller’s 1-yard score with 5.4 seconds left. Miller plunged through the line, appeared to be stopped short but, as the final seconds ticked away, was ruled in the end zone for a 21-14 lead into halftime.
The Cougars then took the opening drive of the second half 73 yards in 10 plays, capped by Hood’s 6-yard scoring run, to lead 28-14. Central stayed within reach on a 5-yard run by Chavis Little, but Hood scored his third TD and fourth TDs in the fourth to finish off the win.
In the first half, the teams exchanged scores, with Charlotte Catholic leading 21-14 at halftime. Hood bounced off the defense for a 31-yard TD run, but then Mack threaded a pass through the defense for a 15-yard TD pass to tie it early in the second.
The Cougars answered with a 42-yard TD, with Miller dropping in a perfect 42-yard play-action bootleg to Tyler Pumeno, but then Mack connected with Pratt on fourth-and-6 for a 38-yard TD. Miller’s score in the final seconds gave Charlotte Catholic the lead into halftime.
