Franklin strolls to city junior title
On an oppressively hot day, Justin Franklin won the High Point junior golf championship in a breeze.
Shooting a second-round 71 at Oak Hollow to go with Tuesday’s opening-round 74 at Blair Park, Franklin won by a whopping 11 shots in the featured boys 16-18 division. He finished at 145 while Hunter Whetzel wound up second at 156. Whetzel finished with a 77 to go with an opening round 79. Addison Dorn wound up third at 79-79—158.
Franklin came into the final round tied with Wes Cline. But Cline ballooned to an 88 for a 162.
Colin Miller came from behind to win in first flight. He finished at 167 to edge first-round leader Kasey Nichols by a shot. Nichols shot a second straight 84 but Miller carded a finishing 78 to go with an opening 89.
Donavan Durham prevailed in the boys 13-15 division. Durham finished with a 73-79—152 for a 6 shot victory over Ryan Lantz (80-78—158). Mason Jenkins started the day in second, two shots behind, but soared to an 88.
Andre Johnson was the 13-15 first flight winner. He carded 83-81— 152 to finish 9 shots ahead of Isaac Childrey (85-96–163).
Chase Sells posted a 7-shot victory in the boys 10-12 championship flight. He improved 4 shot for a 44 over nine holes and a 92 total, William Holt was second at 49-50—99. Michael Blair was the first flight winner with a 53-39— 92. Benjamin McCain took the boys 7-9 division with a 55-59—114 while Kendall Tyler finished first in girls 7-9 with a 54-57—111.
