Former Andrews star Baker signs with German League team

Former Campbell women’s basketball standout Tonisha Baker, who starred at T.W. Andrews, has signed a professional contract with the Marburg Blue Dolphins, a women’s basketball club based out of Marburg, Germany.

Marburg is a part of the DBBL, the Women’s Basketball Federation League in Germany, and finished 10th last season with at 8-14 record. The team is made up of players from both Europe and the United States.
“I am nearly speechless, but I can finally say that I did it,” said Baker on signing her first contract. “I have worked very hard all my life for this opportunity.”
Baker becomes the second Lady Camel to sign a professional contract with Marburg as April Cromartie (1988-02) joined the squad in 2002-03 following her playing career in Buies Creek. Regina McKeithen (1984-88) also played a season in Germany for Luxemburg in 1989-90.
Baker finished her four-year career with Campbell by totaling 1,526 points, 672 rebounds, 363 assists and 264 steals. The three-time All-Conference performer registered a .466 shooting percentage and hit at a .369 rate from three-point range.
She finished third on the Lady Camels’ charts in three-point percentage (.369), steals (264) and field goals attempted (1,301), while ranking sixth in blocked shots (50), assists (363), field goals made (606) and points (1,526).
The Marburg Blue Dolphins begin the 2013-14 DBBL season on Sep. 29 when they play at TSV 1800 Wasserburg.

STEPHENS, FOY POWER HITOMS PAST REDWOLVES
THOMASVILLE — Evan Stephens homered twice and teammate Sam Foy also connected as the HiToms topped Florence 8-6 on Wednesday night at Finch Field.
Stephens finished 2 for 4 with a walk, three RBIs and a stolen base for the HiToms (9-10). Foy went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs. Josh Frederick (3-1) tossed 6 and a third innings with two runs (0 earned), three walks and two strikeouts to get the win. Hunter Rice earned his sixth save.
The HiToms visit Martinsville tonight at 7, then play host to Martinsville for a pir of 7-inning contests on Friday.

HIGH POINT’S OVERBEY REACHES N.C. JUNIOR GIRLS QUARTERFINALS
FUQUAY-VARINA — High Point’s Cecily Overbey posted two victories at the 17th annual N.C. Girls Junior Championship on Tuesday at par-72, 5,876-yard Bentwinds Country Club.
Overbey defeated Annie Collom of Davidson 3 and 2 in round one, then topped Megan Cullip of Charlotte 4 and 2 to advance to today’s 8:25 a.m. quarterfinal against Greensboro’s Lucia Polo.

HIGH POINT’S OWEN ADVANCES TO N.C. JUNIOR BOYS QUARTERFINALS
CARY — High Point’s Tanner Owen posted two wins on Wednesday to advance to today’s round of 16 in the 46th annual N.C. Junior Boys Championship at the Highlands Course at Prestonwood Country Club.
Owen defeated fellow High Pointer Hardin Councill 4 and 2 in the round of 64, then topped Philip Oweida of Charlotte 2-up in the round of 32.
Owen plays Charlotte’s David Kocher today at 8:32 a.m. in the round of 16.
Also Wednesday, High Point’s Harrison Frye fell 4 and 3 to Jacob Kennedy of Mt. Ulla in the round of 64.
