Bishop boys open season in style

KERNERSVILLE – Kevin Weckworth and Christian Sexton scored 16 points each to help the Bishop McGuinness boys open the season with a 61-51 victory over Salem Baptist late Monday.
Expanding a two-point lead, Bishop pulled away in the fourth quarter even though Sexton, Will Webster and Nick Efird fouled out. The Villains survived despite committing 30 turnovers.
Weckworth had 10 rebounds while he, Tommy Koesters and Efird had four steals each.

TRINITY — A number of area girls and boys basketball teams will take the court Friday and Saturday in the Headliners Challenge, sponsored by Domino’s Pizza, at Wheatmore High.
The Friday games are: Asheboro girls vs. Greensboro Day at noon; High Point Central girls vs. Winston-Salem Prep at 1:30; Asheboro boys vs. Greensboro Day at 3; Surry Central girls vs. Reagan at 4:30; Dudley girls vs. Southwest Guilford at 6; and New Hope Christian vs. West Forsyth at 7:30.
The Saturday games are: Wilkes Central girls vs. Ragsdale, noon; Wakefield girls vs. Greensboro Day at 1:30; High Point Christian boys vs. Wakefield at 3; Smith girls vs. Kinston at 4:30; Wheatmore girls vs. Northern Guilford; and Wheatmore boys vs. Northern Guilford at 7:30.


WALLBURG – Ledford topped Wesleyan, 50-25, and fell to Central Davidson, 46-39, on Monday.
Connor Sherrill (120 pounds), Chase Lewis (126), Austin Deberry (132), Drew Chappell (152), Zak Koontz (195) and Ben Rickard (220) went 2-0 for the Panthers. Brad Ross (138), Devon Carter (145) and Gage Gagner (285) were 1-1.


WINSTON-SALEM - Ledford gained a split with Mid-Piedmont 3A foe North Forsyth on Monday, with Panther girls winning 79-65 and the North Forsyth boys prevailing, 90-71.
Winners for the Panthers girls were the 200 medley relay team of Caroline Klemme, Lexi Kershaw, Erica Hartsell and Pray Webster; Kaniee Saintsing in the 200 free; Klemme in the 200IM Webster in the 50 free; Kershaw in the 100 free and back; and the 400 freestyle relay teams of Hartzell, Klemme, Kerhsaw and Webster.
First-place finishers for the Panther boys were Gave Setzer in the 200 IM and 11 butterfly; and Nick Gomex in the 100 backstroke.
