Bucs stop Trojans in state soccer semifinals

NCISAA 3A SEMIFINALS

LEWISVILLE — Wesleyan Christian Academy’s two-year run as NCISAA state 3A soccer champion ended Friday night.
The second-seeded Trojans fell 1-0 to fourth-seeded Charlotte Country Day School in the semifinals hosted by Forsyth Coutry Day School.
The Buccaneers (13-3-1) made an early second-half goal stand up to advance to today’s 1 p.m. state title match hosted by Forsyth Country Day.
Connor Bell made six saves in goal for the Trojans (18-4-3).

TENNIS

NCHSAA 3A CHAMPIONSHIPS
BURLINGTON — A pair of Ledford doubles teams capped successful seasons in the NCHSAA 3A championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.
The Panthers’ Taylor Freeman and Elizabeth Stroup fell to Cardinal Gibbons’ Natalie Freeman-Summer Jacobs 6-2, 7-5 in the first round. Ledford’s Sarah Richardson-Katie Wilson lost 6-0, 6-0 to Cardinal Gibbons’ Devin Knors-Lizzie Galush in round one.

NCHSAA 1A CHAMPIONSHIPS
CARY — Bishop McGuinness’ Kyndall Cortes saw her stellar individual season end with a second-round loss in the NCHSAA 1A championships at the Cary Tennis Center on Friday.
Cortes defeated Kinsey Blount of Durham Voyager Academy 6-3, 6-1 in round one before falling to Courtney Mudge of the Community School of Davidson 6-3, 6-0 in round two.
Bishop McGuinness (13-2, No. 2 seed from Northwest) faces Graystone Day (18-3, No. 1 seed from the Yadkin Valley West) in the third round of the NCHSAA 1A dual-team tennis tournament on Monday at 4 p.m. at Pfeiffer University.

VOLLEYBALL

WHEATMORE VISITS EAST DUPLIN TODAY
BEULAVILLE — Wheatmore travels to East Duplin for an NCHSAA 2A fourth-round volleyball playoff match today at 7 p.m.
The Warriors (25-1) are the top seed from the PAC-6 2A. East (22-0) is the top seed from the East Central.

WHEATMORE DEF. CARRBORO
TRINITY — Wheatmore defeated visiting Carrboro 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 15-9 on Thursday in the third round of the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs.
Kelly Davis had 51 assists and five aces for the Warriors (25-1), the top seed from the PAC-6, while Georgia Garrison had 21 kills and five digs, Kathryn Johnson had 19 kill and 16 digs, and Davey Albertson had 12 kills and six blocks.
Emily Brown added six aces, while Casey Hawkins had 10 digs, and Allie Grubb had five kills and five blocks.
Wheatmore, in the regional semifinals for the first time, will visit East Duplin (22-0, No. 1 East Central) today. If it were to win, its next match would be at home Tuesday against either South Granville or Southern Vance.

N. STOKES DEF. BISHOP
DANBURY — Bishop McGuinness fell to host North Stokes 20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 15-11 on Thursday in the third round of the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs.
Julia Brown had 27 kills and 51 digs for the Villains (17-6, No. 3 Northwest), while Jessica Brandewie (nine kills, 17 assists, 17 digs) and  Julie Dorosiewicz (eight kills, 59 digs) also led a host of strong performances.
North Stokes (18-6, No. 1 Northwest) will play Starmount in the regional semifinals.

GLENN 1, RAGSDALE 0
KERNERSVILLE — Christian Zavala scored off an assist by Elijah Womie for the lone score of the game, as Glenn topped visiting Ragsdale 1-0 in Piedmont Triad 4A Conference action Thursday.
Matt Haynes and Evander Silva each made three saves in goal for the Bobcats, while Daniel Kanakanui made six for the Tigers.
