Bishop, Wheatmore, Ledford net playoff volleyball victories

VOLLEYBALL

BISHOP DEF. GRAY STONE
MISENHEIMER — Bishop McGuinness swept Gray Stone Day School 25-22, 25-17, 25-19 in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A playoffs on Saturday.
Jessica Brandewie led a balanced Villains attack with 27 assists, eight kills, six digs, five aces and a block. Julie Dorosiewicz recorded 26 digs and 10 kills for Bishop (16-5), seeded third from the Northwest Conference. Julia Brown registered 21 kills, 14 digs and four blocks for the Villains, while Delaney Findling made 16 digs and an ace. Tia Cappuccio had 33 digs, an ace and an assist, while Erin Redden had 12 digs and two blocks for the Villains.
Gray Stone, the No. 2 seed from the Yadkin Valley, finishes 16-3.

WHEATMORE DEF. TRINITY
TRINITY — Kathryn Johnson recorded her 1,000th career kill as Wheatmore swept Trinity in three games in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs on Saturday.
The Warriors, the top seed from the PAC-6, improved to 23-1. The Bulldogs, a wildcard from the PAC-6, finished 14-10.
Johnson finished with 13 kills, eight service points, four digs and two aces, while teammate Georgia Garrison made 11 kills, five digs, five service points and an ace. Kelly Davis dished 31 assists with 16 service points, six aces and three digs for the Warriors, while Davey Albertson had eight blocks, six service points, five kills and an ace. Allie Grubb added five kills and four blocks for Wheatmore, while Casey Hawkins had six digs and two service points and Emily Brown had eight service points, three kills, two aces and two digs.

LEDFORD DEF. LEE
SANFORD — Kayla Leach led a balanced attack with 10 kills and three blocks and Alyssa Doby collected 28 assists, 10 service points and an ace as Ledford ousted Lee County 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21 in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A playoffs on Saturday.
Alis Styer notched 13 service points and two aces for the Panthers (17-7), the third seed from the Mid-Piedmont. Sierra Cefali tallied seven kills and three digs for Ledford, while Siarra Walker had 10 kills, Jesse Hayworth made 15 service points and Tori Farlow made 17 digs.
Lee, top seed from the Cape Fear Valley, finished 15-5.
Ledford advances to face Cedar Ridge on Tuesday. Site and time are to be determined.

SOUTHERN ALAMANCE DEF. SW GUILFORD
GRAHAM — Southern Alamance downed Southwest Guilford three games to one in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs on Saturday.
The Patriots, top seed from the Metro, improved to 24-3. The Cowgirls, a wildcars from the Piedmont Triad, finished 12-13.

PORTER RIDGE DEF. RAGSDALE
JAMESTOWN — Porter Ridge topped Ragsdale three games to one in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs on Saturday.
Porter Ridge, seeded third from the Southwestern, improved to 14-7. The Tigers, seeded second from the Piedmont Triad, finished 15-8.

FOOTBALL

SOUTHERN GUILFORD 17, ASHEBORO 14
ASHEBORO — Francisco Lopez kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired to lift Southern Guilford to a 17-14 Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference win over Asheboro late Friday night.
The Storm improved to 5-4, 3-1. The Blue Comets fell to 5-3, 2-1.
Reggie Gallaspy scored on a 20-yard run for Southern, while Kenyon Taylor caught a 78-yard TD pass from J’myiah Zincent.
Southern plays host to Southwestern Randolph on Friday.

LEDFORD 24, SW RANDOLPH 7
FARMER — Ledford cruised past Southwestern Randolph for a 24-7 Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference victory late Friday night.
The Panthers improved to 5-3, 2-2. The Cougars fell to 2-6, 0-3.
Ledford plays host to East Rowan on Friday night.
