HPU cross-country teams picked to finish second
The men’s and women’s cross-country teams from High Point University were the choices to finish second in the Big South Conference, according to preseason polls released by the league Tuesday. Both teams start the season Friday at Western Carolina.
The Panthers were slotted behind Liberty in both instances.
HPU’s women received 130 points to finish four points shy of the Flames. Following Liberty and High Point in the preseason poll: Costal Carolina in third and Winthrop in fourth, with Campbell and UNC Asheville tied for fifth. Behind them were VMI, Radford, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb. Longwood and Presbyterian rounded out the poll.
High Point has three seniors on this year’s squad: Kayleigh Perry, Audrey Malloy and Colleen Hollowood, who will all be integral to the team’s success.
HPU’s men placed second in the Big South Championship last year for the sixth consecutive time. After Liberty and High Point in this year’s preseason poll, Campbell came in third followed by VMI. Behind them were Coastal Carolina, UNC Asheville, Winthrop and Radford. Longwood and Gardner-Webb rounding out the top-10. Charleston Southern and Presbyterian College placed 11th and 12th.
The Panthers return a strong team for the 2013 season as they still have five of the top six runners from last year’s conference championship team.
