For the third time this season the High Point Central boys basketball team came within a couple of plays of knocking off undefeated Southwest Guilford.

But Terrell Leach and company prevented the Bison from giving the Cowboys their first loss Tuesday night, cruising to a 64-60 victory.

Leach scored a game-high 36 points, including a pair of put-back dunks off missed 3-pointers, to propel the Cowboys to its 22nd win of the season without a loss. Southwest stands 11-0 in Piedmont Triad 4A Conference play.

“This is a rival game, they always come ready to play us. There’s a lot of trash talk and it’s a physical game,” said Leach, who crossed 600 points on the season in the win. “(Central) rebounded and played defense very well.”

Central was down by three points at the half and took the lead early in the third quarter off a Michal Seals 3-pointer. The Bison, who have not been an excellent shooting team this season, finished 8 of 16 from beyond the arc.

The Cowboys regained the lead right before the end of the quarter thanks to a Leach breakout. He went on to score 14 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for his team.

“He’s just one of those guys who gets it. All year long it’s the same stuff from him,” head coach Guy Shavers said of Leach.

Central (10-13, 4-7 PTC) was led by Juwan Foggie and Jamal Thompson, each scoring 15 points. The Bison, who took Southwest to overtime last week and to the final second of regulation in the Sheetz Christmas tournament, have lost six of their last seven games.

“We played them hard, they just made a few more plays than us,” Central head coach Patrick Battle said.
