Southwest girls cruise past Central
The Southwest Guilford girls scored the first 57 points of the game in cruising past visiting High Point Central 72-9 on Thursday in Piedmont Triad 4A action.
“I think it was a good overall effort for the team,” Cowgirls coach Jessica Bryan said. “I think it gave my younger ones, who work extremely hard in practice and probably don’t see the floor as much as they’d like, some reps and I thought they did some really good things. I was pleased with their effort in executing our offense.
“I think we still have some inconsistencies. We’ve just got to improve in practice and improve in games. And that’s just kind of been our focus this season. I don’t want us to get complacent and feel just OK with where we are.”
Briana Burgins scored 16 points while Ayana Rivers had 14 and Kennedy Porter had 13 to lead the Cowgirls (15-5, 9-0 PTC), who led 40-0 at halftime. Brianna Franklin scored six to lead the Bison (0-21, 0-9), who finally broke through with a 3-pointer with 1:49 left in the third.
“We started off actually well,” said Central coach Ben Free, who expects to add a player and return several more soon. “The defense was pretty good both halves. We had a couple steals and forced them to take some tough shots. I think they just wore us down. ...
“It’s been tough for them, but, like I teach them with anything, we don’t make excuses, we make adjustments and just keep going.”
Southwest plays again Friday at home against East Forsyth on Senior Night. The Bison visit Glenn on Friday.
