Porter, Cowgirls sink Bobcats
They both had chances to win at the end, but the Cowgirls held on.
The Southwest Guilford girls defeated Glenn 58-57 on Tuesday night to improve to 14-5 overall and remain undefeated in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference at 8-0.
The loss dropped Glenn to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
The Cowgirls were able to continue their nine-game winning streak this season. The win also extended their nine-game regular season winning streak against Glenn.
For most of the fourth quarter, the two teams stayed within a few points of each other, with five lead changes. Within the final minute, the Cowgirls were up 56-55. However, Deonna Young put Glenn up 57-56.
A few seconds later, Kennedy Porter scored to put Southwest up 58-57. Glenn had the ball with 7.5 seconds left, trailing by one but could not score.
Cowgirls coach Jessica Bryan was very proud of the way her girls were able to both comeback and hold on to the lead late in the game.
“It showed a lot of character, and we had good composure,” Bryan said. “That helped us seal the deal at the end.”
This game turned out similar to the last meeting between the two schools, which Southwest won 52-49.
After trailing 27-18, the Lady Bobcats put together a 27-11 run that extended until the end of the third quarter to lead 45-38. Glenn played much better in the second half, not missing a field goal until 5:12 left in the fourth quarter.
Young finished the game leading all scorers with 26 points for Glenn while Porter scored 14 to lead the Cowgirls, followed by Ayana Rivers with 12 and Jessica Bridges and Briana Burgins with 10 apiece.
Southwest Guilford will play again Wednesday against High Point Central. Glenn will also face High Point Central next, but not until Friday.
