Davis, Andrews turn back Central
Santia Davis scored a career-high 25 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead T.W. Andrews over cross-town rival High Point Central 70-4 Friday night to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Red Raiders shot 49 percent from the field and 6-of-13 from 3-point range to cruise to victory. Davis, Mariah Saunders, and Jazmin Taylor all scored in double figures.
“At this point in the season, yeah, we’re expecting to shoot well. Our percentage is based on the looks we get, and tonight we had some really good looks.” Andrews head coach John Shearin said.
In the first quarter, the Red Raiders hit eight of its first 12 shots to jump out to a commanding lead. Davis was perfect from the field on her first four shots to lead the charge, and had 16 points before halftime.
“We’ve been trying to improve on shooting in practice. Because our defense creates a lot of pressure, we are a high percentage shooting team,” Davis said.
Andrews used a combination of a 2-3 zone and a 1-3-1 zone to force 27 Bison turnovers, and only one made field goal on the night.
“We’ve been trying to mix things up. There are multiple areas that we would like to excel in, and the zone defense is just one of those areas.” Shearin said.
Andrews sweeps the season series between the teams and improved to 7-0. The defending PAC-6 2A conference champs are looking to be in mid-season form, excelling on both ends of the floor.
“Credit to our assistant coach in really preparing this basketball team and putting the time into really perfecting our offensive sets.” Shearin said. “We’ve got a long way to go and we are very fortunate to have players working hard in the off season and working extremely hard in practice.”
Meanwhile, Central remains winless on the season.
