Ledford girls dispatch Trinity

The Ledford girls made quick work of Trinity in a 64-13 win Wednesday night at Ledford.

The Panthers — keyed by a suffocating fullcourt defense and quick transition offense — scored the first 13 points of the game, scored 15 of the 17 second-quarter points to lead 32-8 at halftime and cruised in the second half.

“Defensively, we were able to stay in front and not let them execute a whole lot,” Ledford coach John Ralls said. “We did a nice job getting back in transition after missed shots. We tried to pressure and get up on the ball and they threw it long on us a couple times. But we adjusted and handled that pretty well.”

Courtney Callicutt scored 20 points to lead the Panthers (6-2). She scored nine of the team’s 17 points in the first quarter, working inside for a number of easy layups. Leigh Midkiff also had 12 points while Brie Grier added 10 points in a balanced effort.

“It definitely puts you in a different state of mind, when you come out ahead,” said Callicutt, a junior forward, of building the early lead. “It sets the tempo. And when the game’s in your tempo, you kind of have the lead the whole game.

“We practice (defense) every single practice and making sure you’re in their face and causing them problems. We really look at what bothers us defensively and we want that feeling to occur for the other team, capitalize on it and come out on top.”

The Bulldogs (3-4) appeared out of synch from the get-go against Ledford’s defense, turning the ball over five of their first six possessions. They didn’t score until Angelica Conroy’s layup and foul with 2:42 left in the first. Conroy finished with nine points to lead the team.

“I’m upset right now,” Trinity coach Shannon Edwards said. “We came off a great win last night, beating Southern Guilford, and Ledford shut us down pretty much. … They pressure the ball very well and we’ve just got to find a way to get better.”

Ledford plays again Friday at home against East Davidson while Trinity next plays Monday at home.
