High Point’s Owen opens with 69 at N.C. Amateur
High Point’s Tanner Owen stands tied for seventh at 2-under 69 in the rain-delayed first round of the 53rd N.C. Amateur Championship at Forsyth Country Club on Thursday.
Charlotte’s Brian Westveer and Holly Springs’ Wesley Conover share the clubhouse lead at 67, while Davidson’s Chad Frye stood 4-under through nine holes.
Auston Smith of Jamestown shared 30th at 72, while High Point’s Davis Womble shared 81st at 75.
The first round concludes today, with the second round to follow. Round three is Saturday with the final round set for Sunday.
GORDONSVILLE, Va. — Paul Ferrier of Scotland grabbed the clubhouse lead at the rain-delayed eGolf Tour’s Spring Creek Classic.
About half the field was unable to complete round two, which will conclude this morning followed by the final round. Ferrier carded rounds of 68-68—136. Will Collins of Salisbury, David Bradshaw of Harpers Ferry, W.V. and Tarik Can of Manhasset, N.Y. are tied for second at 7-under 137.
High Point’s Drew Weaver currently shares 47th at 73-72—145, 1-over-par. The cut will be made after the completion of round two.
HIGH POINT’S WALSH SHARES 19TH AT AJGA FOOTJOY
GREENSBORO — Carson Young carries a one-stroke lead into today’s final round of the AJGA Footjoy Invitational at Sedgefield Country Club.
Young leads at 6-under 204 after rounds of 66, 66 and 72. Matt Gilcrest stands second at 68-66-71—205. High Point’s Thomas Walsh shares 19th at 72-70-75—217.
MCKIM TAKES N.C. WOMEN’S AMATEUR TITLE
ASHEBORO — Raleigh’s Courtney McKim posted a two-stroke victory in the 64th N.C. Women’s Amateur Championship that ended Thursday at Pinewood Country Club.
McKim finished at 75-74-75—224 over the 5,758-yard par-72 layout. Durham’s Alaina Yeatts placed second at 226.
High Point’s Kathy DeVore (98-90-93—281) took eighth in second flight of championship division.
In State Tee Division (shorter course), Jamestown’s Sook Hee Jang placed second at 76-79-82—237, six strokes behind winner Donna Johnson of Asheboro.
Jamestown’s Bonnie Montgomery placed third in state 2 flight at 85-89-84—258, with High Point’s Kum Sook Lee fifth at 89-85-88—262.
JAMESTOWN’S LANCE TIES FOR THIRD AT N.C. JUNIOR BOYS QUALIFYING
JAMESTOWN — Gastonia’s Drew Jurs carded 68 to pace N.C. Boys Junior Championship qualifying at par-72, 6,665-yard Jamestown Park on Thursday.
Jamestown’s Zach Lance tied for third at 71, while Jamestown’s Drew Adams shot 77 and was among the 28 players to qualify for the 46th annual event later this summer.
VAN DER WALT LEADS AT SAINT-OMER
SAINT-OMER, France — South Africa’s Tjaart Van der Walt shot a 4-under 67 in windy conditions Thursday to take a one-stroke lead in the European Tour’s Najeti Hotels Open.
France’s Victor Riu was second after a birdie-birdie-eagle finish at Saint-Omer Golf Club.
England’s Daniel Brooks opened with a 69, and Australia’s Daniel Gaunt and France’s Olivier Rozner shot 70.
