Kinston teams sweep 2A state crowns

BASKETBALL

2A GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

KINSTON 51, PISGAH 40
CHAPEL HILL — Lydia Rivers had 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Kinston to a 51-40 victory over Canton Pisgah and the school’s first Class 2A North Carolina High School Athletic Association girls championship.
Sheridan Pressley and Brooklyn Allen each had 13 points and four rebounds to lead Canton Pigsah.

2A BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

KINSTON 56, CUTHBERTSON 53
CHAPEL HILL — Denzel Keves had 18 points and 10 rebounds to take Kinston to a 56-53 victory over Cuthbertson Saturday to capture the Class 2A North Carolina High School Athletic Association boys championship.
Josh Brandon had 12 points, seven rebounds and five rebounds for Kinston (28-2), and Brandon Ingram added 12 points and three blocked shots.
Shelton Mitchell had 22 points on 9-of-22 shooting to lead Cuthbertson. Isiah Cureton had nine points and Justin Austin had eight points and seven rebounds in the loss.

1A BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

WINSTON-SALEM PREP 53, ROCKY MOUNTAIN PREP 41
RALEIGH — Winston-Salem Prep has captured its third Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association boys championship in the last six years with a 53-41 win over Rocky Mount Prep on Saturday.
Mike Hughes and Raekwon Harney each scored 12 points for Winston-Salem Prep, which finished the season 32-1. Aaron Lipscomb had 10 points and Coye Simmons had 13 rebounds and eight points. Reserve Will Tibbs added six points.
Deshawn Freeman scored 15 points to lead Rocky Mount Prep (24-4), while Jacob Barrett had 11 points and eight rebounds. Donte Samuels added seven points and had three steals in the loss.

SOFTBALL

WHEATMORE 7, SW RANDOLPH 3
TRINITY — Taylor Walker’s grand slam in the sixth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted Wheatmore’s girls to a 7-3 win over Southwestern Randolph on Saturday.
Morgan Halo got the win for the Warriors (8-0), striking out three and allowing one earned run. Katie Bailiff finished 2-for-4 with a double for Wheatmore, while Sydney Peel went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Davey Albertson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Wheatmore plays host to Carver on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

GLENN 10, SW GUILFORD 8
HIGH POINT — Glenn defeated Southwest Guilford 10-8 late Friday.
Karen Foley (4-2) got the win for the Bobcats (5-2, 3-0 PTC 4A). Michaela Smith notched her first save.
Tracy Haynes went 4-for-5 with two runs for Glenn, while Taylor Strassburg finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run and Ashley Hurd was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Charity Douglas drilled a 3-run home run in the sixth for the Cowgirls (2-2, 1-2). Bri Atkins went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

SOCCER

ASHEVILLE CHRISTIAN 2, WESTCHESTER 0
ASHEVILLE — Asheville Christian Academy netted a 2-0 win over Westchester Country Day School on Saturday.
Maddie Dyson made 16 saves for the Wildcats (0-4), who play host to Salem Baptist on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
