Giles among finalists for spots on U17 team

Harry Giles of Wesleyan Christian Academy made the 17 finalists on Saturday who are in contention for the 12 spots on the 2014 USA Basketball Men's U17 World Championship Team.

Those left were selected from 32 who began training camp on  Thursday.

Finalists were selected by the USA Basketball Men's Developmental National Team Committee, chaired by USA Basketball Men's National Team Director Sean Ford. Those who make the team Team will be named prior to Aug. 1.

GIles and nine others were members of the 2013 USA U16 National Team that captured gold. The other seven are international rookies.

The 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship for Men, hosted Aug. 8-16 by Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will feature 16 national teams that qualified through their FIBA zone tournaments.

Team USA will open against Greece on Aug. 8, followed Angola on Aug. 9 and a final preliminary-round game against the Philippines on Aug. 11. The round of 16 will be contested Aug.12, quarterfinals are slated for Aug. 14, semifinals on Aug. 15, and the finals will take place Aug. 16.
