Milburn, Dini help HiToms edge Florence
Matthew Milburn pitched eight innings of one-run ball and Nick Dini drove in the game-winning run as the High Point-Thomasville HiToms beat the Florence RedWolves 2-1 on Friday night.
It was a pitcher’s duel throughout as the HiToms’ Matthew Milburn went toe-to-toe with RedWolves starter James Phillips through the first five innings. Each team exchanged single runs in the early going. Florence (5-4) struck first with a RBI single from right-fielder Brandon Rawe in the top of the third inning, but the HiToms (4-4) responded in the same fashion in the bottom of the fourth as Matt Orth drove the pitch to center field to score the game-tying run. Both teams were held at bay until the HiToms struck in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on the corners and one out, Nick Dini capped his 2-for-4 day with the game-winning RBI single to left field.
Milburn (2-0) stood out from the mound tossing eight innings and allowing just one earned run, six hits, and one walk while punching out six. Florence’s Travis Burnette (1-1), who came on in relief, took the loss.
The HiToms continue their five-game home stand at Finch Field on Saturday night at 7 against the Gastonia Grizzlies.
