Sharks devour HiToms
Four unearned runs in the second and third innings doomed the HiToms in a 6-1 loss Friday against the Wilmington Sharks at Finch Field to close the first half of the Coastal Plain League season. The game was called in the sixth due to weather.
Three errors over those two innings gave the Sharks (13-12) ample opportunities. They capitalized with three two-out hits — a two-run RBI single by Alex Perez in the second, followed by an RBI double by Tyler Slaton and RBI single by Leighton Davis in the third to lead 4-0.
Zach Stephens then hit a two-run bomb in the fifth to give Wilmington a 6-1 lead. Beau Dees also pitched well in limiting the HiToms (13-15), allowing one run on four hits and no walks in five innings. James Lively took the loss in 4 ⅔ innings, ceding six runs on seven hits.
The HiToms, who’ve welcomed a bevy of new players in the last week, scored their lone run in the bottom of the third. Kyle Brandenburg and Mike White hit back-to-back doubles with two outs to score Brandenburg and momentarily pull within three runs.
The HiToms, who have lost five straight after winning five in a row, host Team USA tonight at 7 and Sunday at 5 p.m. before opening second-half play Monday at home against Martinsville.
