HPU’s Crawford races to win at Furman

Senior Patrick Crawford won the individual title at the Furman University Classic, leading the High Point University men’s cross country team to a runner-up showing on Saturday morning. Redshirt-sophomore Jeff LaCoste placed third in the race.

Furman won the meet with 35 points followed by High Point (63) and Duke (64). Georgia Tech placed fourth and Georgia took fifth in the 25-team field.
Crawford won in 23:46.67. He passed Furman freshman Tanner Hinkle with 2,000 meters to go and pulled away for the finish on the final loop of the course. LaCoste sprinted in with a time of 23:59.58, pulling away from Furman’s Troy Reeder.
HPU sophomore Benji Szalai placed 14th in 24:29.97. Sophomore Paddy Grandinali placed 19th in 24:35.55 and junior Reece Ayers took 26th in 24:52.14 to finish out HPU’s scoring.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Freshman Cozette Collin placed fifth overall to lead the High Point University women’s cross country team to a fifth-place finish in the Furman University Classic on Saturday morning. Sophomore Katie Farina was the Panthers’ second finisher in 14th.
Collin finished the 6K course in 21:22.33, moving up throughout the race and coming from behind down the final stretch to pass Georgia Tech’s Katie Townsend, who finished in 21:23.84. Collin has led the Panthers in each of her first two collegiate races.
Farina placed 14th in 21:51.01. Senior Audrey Malloy placed 35th in 22:16.54 and junior Lauren Blackwell placed 36th in 22:23.74. The Panthers’ fifth scorer was junior Sarah Dorrell, who placed 40th in 22:27.55. Furman won the team title followed by Clemson, Georgia and Georgia Tech. High Point placed fifth out of 23 teams and the Panthers were followed by Georgia State.

STATESBORO, Ga. — The High Point University volleyball team dropped a tight four-set battle to Oral Roberts on Saturday at the Georgia Southern Volleyball Tournament. Three of the sets were decided by two points as the Golden Eagles edged HPU 28-30, 24-26, 25-23, 21-25.
Junior Kristin Heldt led the Panthers with 21 kills and nine digs while sophomore Annemarie Chin tallied a match-high 32 digs. Junior Chelsea Davis also posted 15 kills and eight digs.
McKenna Quails led ORU with 16 kills and 18 digs and Luara Rosa added 13 kills.
HPU is 4-6 on the season while Oral Roberts improves to 8-1.
Panther junior Katie Vincent finished with nine kills and senior Maddie Simpson dished 48 assists. The Panthers return to the Millis Center on Tuesday to face VCU at 7 p.m.

HUNTERSVILLE — SouthLake Christian topped High Point Christian Academy 53-16 in football late Friday night.
The Cougars fell to 2-2. SouthLake improved to 3-0.
