HPU women golfers finish fifh

The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 305 in the third and final round of the UNCG/Starmount Fall Classic on Tuesday to finish in fifth place out of 15 teams with a total score of 900 (304-291-305). 

Sarah Bae finished third for the tournament with a 54-hole score of 214, one-over par, setting a new HPU program record for 54-holes and a record for low score vs. par. The previous 54-hole record of 222 (+6) was set by Kate O’Sullivan at the 2006 PUPS Big South Women’s Championship.

Danielle Fuss turned in a 75 in the final round and finished in a tie for 21st with a total score of 224 (79-70-75). Grier Bennett and sophomores Casey Ward and Tan Cheeranont all shot 78 in the third round on Tuesday for the Panthers. Bennett finished tied for 38th with a 54-hole score of 231 (76-77-78), Ward finished in 46th with a score of 233 (79-76-78) and Cheeranont finished tied for 48th with a score of 235 (82-75-78).

High Point’s 54-hole score of 900 is a new HPU program record, besting the previous record set back in 2005-06 by 30 strokes. The Panthers improved 10 spots from their finish in last year’s UNCG/Starmount tournament when they finished in 15th with a total score of 957.

Chatanooga shot 298 in the final round and won the team title with a combined score of 876.



HIGH POINT — The team of Tucker Crawford and Mary Crawford prevailed in the High Point Country Club Ladies Golf Association member-member tournament on Tuesday at Willow Creek.

They carded a best-ball low gross of 91 and finished three shots ahead of Suasan Samuel and Doona Moose. Gina Gichrist and Jody Carter wound up low net with a 70.
