Trinity boys roll to first-round win
David Newcomer scored 31 points while Brandon Earnhardt added 21 as No. 3-seed Trinity crushed Ashe Co. 75-33 in the opening round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs on Monday.
No. 14-seed Trinity (20-4) held Ashe to just 10 points in the second half. Up 41-23 at the half, the Bulldogs went on a 24-7 spree in the third quarter to go up 65-30 heading into the final period.
Nine players scored for Trinity, which faces Randleman on Wednesday. Randleman upset Wheatmore 53-50 on Monday.
WILKES CENTRAL 64, E. DAVIDSON 48
MORAVIAN FALLS – Wilkes Central bounced East Davidson from the NCHSAA 2A playoffs with a 64-48 victory on Monday. East ends the season 8-18.
CUTHBERTSON 90, ANDREWS 61
MONROE – Cuthbertson ended T.W. Andrews season on Monday, routing the Red Raiders 90-61 in the opening round of the state playoffs.
Bennie Butler scored 30 points while Chris Eatmon had 15 and Jahsiah Murphy had 10 to lead Andrews, which finished the season 8-17.
DUDLEY 78. RAGSDALE 57
GREENSBORO – Dudley rolled to a 78-57 victory over Ragsdale in the opening round of the state playoffs on Monday. Ragsdale finished 12-14.
S. STOKES 68, BISHOP 44
WALNUT COVE – Seventh-seeded South Stokes started pulling away in the second quarter and rolled to a 68-44 victory over No. 10 seed Bishop McGuinness in the opening round of the NCHSAA 1A playoffs Monday.
Ahead by three after one quarter, the Sauras (16-10) increased the margin to 28-13 at the half, then outscored the Villains 40-31 in the second half.
Tucker Crews led Bishop (14-12) with 13 points while Kevin Weckworth added 12.
CUTHBERTSON 38, TRINITY 32
MONROE – Trinity saw its season come to an end with a 38-32 loss to Cuthbertson in the opening round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs on Monday.
The Bulldogs, who finish 11-14, got within one late before Cuthbertson (17-10) scored the last five points of the game by way of free throws.
Anglica Conroy led the Trinity scoring with 14 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Jordan Parker added nine points, Sage Earnhardt five and Noelle Butler four.
EAST DAVIDSON 56, ATKINS 49
THOMASVILLE – East Davidson held off an Atkins rally for a 56-49 in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs on Monday and will travel to No. 1 seed T.W. Andrews on Wednesday.
Atkins erased all but one point of a 12-point East lead before the Golden Eagles pulled away at the end. Bayley Plummer of East led all scorers with 26 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked six shots.
THOMASVILLE 70, FORBUSH 32
THOMASVILLE – Thomasville cruised to a 70-32 victory over Forbush in the opening round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs and will play host to No. 6 seed Forest Hills on Wednesday.
BISHOP 59, CHATHAM CENTRAL 21
KERNERSVILLLE – No.4-seed Bishop McGuinness opened its quest for another NCHSAA 1A tournament championship with a 59-21 victory over visiting No. 13-seed Chatham Central.
Cameron Nieters led the Villains (20-7) with 11 points and Julia Borwn added 10. Katie Burske added nine.
Bishop held Chatham to six points or less in each quarter and led 19-4 after one quarter and 41-10 at the half.
